I'd read this blog post and SS thread. I have stayed out as my views would be fairly unpopular I've addressed these topics before ... that said, I'll reply here later when I get back in.

I cannot believe someone was stupid enough to pack that much gear in with their clothing. you don't have to be a genius, rocket scientist or self purported airline travel expert to know this. a friggin 10 year old would be smart enough NOT to do that. as I said in the previous thread....I've traveled a little over the years....my gear...stays. with. me. if it's in a rolling bag on a regional jet...I watch it put in the plane and watch it being taken out. plain and simple. as many others said if you're carrying a LOT of stuff SHIP IT. I've only done that once...for the olympics in sydney.....a very large cabbage case...locked...and insured...it made it there and back with no problems. I have never even entertained the thought of putting it in my regular suitcase...even before the creation of the TSA. unfortunately there is no cure for stupid.

->> Mark,

I don't have time to finish what I am writing about this tonight, so I'll start with the bullet points

1 - Locks are absolutely allowed.

2 - Non-TSA locks are allowed if you toss a starter pistol in your bag and your bag meets firearms requirements (any Pelican case meets those requirements)

3 - A non-photo specific , or high value , bag is less likely to be rifled through, so toss the Pelican case in a duffel bag. Also Priority Tags tend to increase the rate of theft

4 - jetBlue's Contract of Carriage (along with all airlines) states that they will not accept liability for cameras, cash, electronics, medications, jewelery , etc, placed into checked baggage (this is very well known)

5 - jetBlue Flt 922, ORD-BOS on the 18th of December ... like all jetBlue flights at ORD are not handled by the airline. Ground operations, including baggage handling, is handled by Menzies Aviation, a 3rd party GSE provider. A Pilfered Bag Claim should be made with the departing airport police, as well as TSA and the Ground Handling Agent.

6 - Statistically theft from checked baggage is not from the airlines or TSA, it is from 3rd party handlers

7 - When packing gear, if you have so much that you need to use your carry on and checked bags to handle a job, items such as cameras and computers should be shuffled to make it on board while other items go below. If you have one spare body that just won't fit in your carry on, toss it on your shoulder with a lens. The airline's won't give it a second look (with the exception of Spirit Airlines in the US and Ryanair in Europe)

8 - If traveling with camera gear that needs to be checked, a photog should get their own insurance, such as the NPPA insurance, which would cover these thefts or loss

9 - I think the airline giving up the $1,000 voucher was in the wrong. They should have adhered to their own Contract of Carriage. This voucher violates and skirts multiple sections of their 39 page CoC, which meets US DOT and IATA guidelines for an enforceable CoC

I'm cleaning out my office, and came across a spare copy of Data Rescue. Since you seem to now have some free time on your hands, would you like me to send it to you? You could use it to scan your old hard drives to find images that you owe to some brides.

Also, if you want to be taken seriously, you probably need to cite sources. You have a reputation......

A) That stuff is long cleared up ... and its great when a bride says "I never received any of my photos" yet they have a Knot Page with my photos, credited to me, and their Facebook profile photo is one that I shot.

B) If you want sources ... try reading what I write where I am taken quite seriously, syndicated, frequently cited . You want the sources on stats, go work your journalism skills out and search BTS.gov, IATA, DHS public documents.

Let me know when you publish multiple stories on the TSA and DHS before anyone else based on not yet released security directives that are later released and never refuted by the agency; call security gaps months before a problem arises (such as writing about cargo security months before bombs ended up flying as commercial cargo) ; pick apart "mainstream media" stories on aviation security that result in the outlet retracting their story and/or give details no one else has that are proven correct ... but hey you don't want to trust what I write on the airline industry and aviation security I couldn't care less.

->> Chuck,

You are the jackass who came onto my Facebook page, called me out, asked me to prove things with photographic evidence ... which I then did. I need not explain anything to you, to SportsShooter or anyone else on here.

The fact that I haven't said squat on SportsShooter is that I don't give a crap what you think, since you already made an ass of yourself when I proved you wrong and you stormed off like a pissy five year old.

I commented on this thread at Mr. Loundy asked me to.

You choose to doubt my expertise in the realm of covering the airline industry, go use your journalism skills.

Go look up where I called significant changed in Emirates service to JFK, including where aircraft would be redeployed to, months before the airline made any announcements ; Read where I detailed how airlines would be using in-flight wifi to drive revenue and brand differentiation before Row 44 & Southwest Airlines announced they were doing exactly what I had stated would happen ; Go read where I detailed how Delta Air Lines and Virgin Atlantic would be tied up in a joint venture , nearly down to the exact dollar amount, two years before exactly what I detailed occurred ; Go read the multiple times I have written about TSA security directives and play-book changes before they were made public, even at times before they were released internally ; Go read my detailed piece on gaps in air cargo security three months before what I wrote about occurred ; Go read my post about a radio host that had problems with the TSA , never stating the date, airport, airline related to the incident and in my post detailed the date, exact time, airline, airport , gate and type of of TSA agent involved with the incident.

You want to $#!+ talk me, great. You want to challenge me on my expertise in this specific realm, you'll look like a bigger idiot than you already made yourself look a year ago when you challenged me and I proved your B.S. wrong.

I'm done. Piss off.

->> David,

Its hard to recycle things that you have before other people, wouldn't you say? My blog, which is has been syndicated by USA Today, previously by WorldMate on on BoardingArea, which was established by the founder of FlyerTalk, is not in real time. Blogs don't operate in real time in the way Twitter, Facebook, Tout, Instagram operate. In fact on a good number of stoeis I am rarely first because I prefer to be in depth and add insight rather than just follow the herd.

Given that I have been on Good Morning America, Fox Business News, CNN, been quoted by Flightglobal, Aviationweek, Forbes, ABC News, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, MSNBC, been on a gues on countless traditional media radio shows and other media your clearly have not a clue what your talking about.

Maybe if you knew the difference between a blog and real-time social media; knew what journalism and research were; knew how to develop contacts that lead to stories; and knew how to become an expert in a specific field, you would not have gone from being a New York Times photo editor, to an editor in Toledo to a Dark Room Manager at a community college where you stock supplies, act as a teachers aid and advise students in areas where you appear to have no background or expertise.

By the way ... you asked me to never refer to you a while back in an email, yet you never seen to shut up about me. You talk about me here, on Twitter, on Facebook to NPPA elected officials ... follow your own request, which you put in writing , and shut up. You come off looking like a putz.

You know what is most pathetic? The fact that I don't give you a second thought, ever for any reason, yet I have seen you refer to me many times in a number of places, including on SportsShooter , in threads I am in no way involved in. I don't jump in because you're not worth the time, effort or anything else to me.

Does it seem normal to you that you bring me up with some frequency in various venues when we have not conversed in a very long time and I never refer to you? Seems unhealthy and a little bit unbalanced to me.

It's easy to get folks to stop questioning you and your purported body of work...show us...you never have...and there is a reason for that. the simple fact is a great many of the photos you say you have shot simply don't exist anywhere. some of the things you have said you shot must only exist in your mind. and that is only one of the many problems with your "photojournalism". and to be very clear, I posted to your facebook page politely asking to see some of your photos taken in Iraq. that always touches a nerve with me when some GWC like you spouts off about being in a war zone and I find out he landed at the baghdad airport go out of the plane made a photo and left. that is a disservice for the scores of real photographers who have risked their lives reporting from war zones and natural disasters (which you also claim to have shot). no fish, the problem you suffer from is omission. you spout off stuff but leave out many of the pertinent facts (oh and there is the whole, where is the VISUAL proof aspect). but I digress...I'll shut up if you show me this one photo you have made a big deal about taking....the plane crash near long island. you have said for years you made a photo of coast guardsmen crying with recovered victims of the plane crash in body bags stacked behind them. I have looked everywhere for this photo. you said you shot it for a wire service.....I can access every wire service imaginable through my photo desk access....and have yet to find this photo. you were right about one thing....I am an asshole.... to people I consider frauds. I actually take that as a compliment coming from you.
