Tribune newspapers dropping AP

->> This is going to get interesting. I've had ongoing conversations with another SS.com member over the last year and the question was a simple one: Is AP part of the problem or part of the solution? This is not intended to be of any disrespect to the AP (which I love); this is two guys having a business discussion about the future.
This much I do know: Somethings are going to change. |

| ->> Yup.... Look for a radical shift in staffing and staffers. In our state 96% of the statehouse/political photos are supplied to the AP by our paper. Not that it's their fault but the two state staffers are mainly concerned with pro, top ranked college sports and the occasional national disaster. In recent years the AP's "offer" to reduce member fees by having members flood the wire with local feature art has resulted in an avalanche of stand alone photos. Also, many of the AP's own scribblers now fancy themselves as photographers and shoot art for their own stories. The AP used to be the go to wire service....that has changed dramatically with all the side deals news organizations are making among one another. If other chains decide to cancel their various subscriptions to AP's services there will be a bloodbath which will not be pretty |

| ->> The AP provides most of the International news for papers, but not fully sure how the other wires compare on the US news front. |

| ->> I've heard rumblings that Reuters is making a HUGE push into AP's market in 2013. It's going to be interesting to see what comes this coming year. |

->> AP has made continual cuts in my neck of the woods (NH, Vt.) over the years. Nowadays they have very lean staffs.
News agencies up here tend to help each other quite a bit as it is. They are also tightening their belts a lot. I wouldn't be surprised if, someday soon, papers in both states established news sharing agreements and cut out AP. |

->> Not surprising considering how much it costs to carry AP.
I wouldn't be surprised if people start turning toward aggregators such as Zuma, Landov and Newscom. In my opinion some of the agencies provide more value (pictures are generally a la carte) than a bulk subscription to a wire.
Reuters and Getty are great, but certainly are not inexpensive either, and their coverage domestically (outside of the big cities) are rather scant. They are certainly getting better, but AP is still king for the local coverage.
That being said, more and more I'm seeing AP isn't covering things that they normally would have, that Getty and Reuters are.
It'll be interesting to see how the wire landscape changes in the next few years. |
