RIP Jerry Laizure, Oklahoma legend.
Nate Billings, Photographer
Oklahoma City | OK | USA | Posted: 11:50 PM on 12.03.12
->> It is with great sadness that I share with the sports photography community that photographer, assistant, general technical wizard and former longtime Sportsshooter member Jerry Laizure has died.

If you ever worked in Oklahoma or came to Norman to cover an OU game, Jerry probably helped you and made you laugh. He was instrumental in making the University of Oklahoma a better place to shoot pictures over the years and strongly believed that it was the job of local photographers to make life easier for visiting shooters.

He helped me in my career more times than I can count, assisting on shoots, loaning me things I forgot or just giving much needed advice.

Jerry always told it like it was and brought things down to earth when we got a little full of ourselves.

My thoughts go out to his wife Peggy, his children (including Sportsshooter member Jackson Laizure), grandchildren and all the people in the photo community who will miss him.

And there is no question he will be greatly missed.

->> Jerry was truly one of the greats. He always put himself before others and helped me out too many times to count. Thanks for all you help and advice Jerry, you will be missed.

->> Jerry was one of the nicest guys I've ever met.
Sidelines and baselines will never be the same. He was an original and he was thought of by others, the way I aspire to be thought of. Always kind. Always helpful. Always smiling.

->> This is incredibly sad news. Jerry was a wonderful, nice, and helpful guy. When I think of assignments at OU, I think of Jerry, always there with a helpful hand and calm attitude. He helped me on several portrait shoots there and was one of the really good guys in this world. My thoughts and prayers to Jackson and the rest of his family.

->> Nate, do you know what happened to Jerry? I bought some gear from him a few years ago. He was very responsive and seemed to always have a solution for any issue you would ask him about.

->> Whenever there was an assignment at Oklahoma, it was unheard of to not call Jerry first, and unlikely that he wouldn't be there to lend a hand or to keep you company. Jerry was funny, caring, and incredibly kind.

He made trips to Oklahoma truly enjoyable, and will be dearly missed.

->> I am so saddened to hear this. And I can only echo the comments of others. Back in my newspaper days I really looked forward to games in Oklahoma largely because of Jerry. Fantastic human being who will be truly missed by many.

->> Wow, that is sad news. I first met Jerry when I worked in Missouri covering the Tigers. He made trips down to Norman -- whether it be for football, basketball, etc. -- so much easier for me with helpful info before or during the games.

It was equally nice running in to him with some frequency when I moved down to Dallas.

Nicest guy and pretty funny, as I recall. Loved seeing him in those Hawaiian shirts, too.

For anyone who knows his family (I remember his sons would shoot with him pretty often), please pass along our condolences from the DMN.
