Nikon 400 VR darker than AF-S II?

I sent in my AF-S II to NPS and was sent a VR as a loaner. First thing I noticed when shooting a night highschool game was that the lens seemed darker. Ended up having to increase the ISO to 12,800 when I normally shoot the field at ISO 8000.
