The Bello Family Relief Effort

->> Getty photographer Al Belloís family home has suffered extensive hurricane damage. Not once but twice, last year during Hurricane Irene and now Hurricane Sandyís onslaught in Merrick, NY.

The storm surge from Hurricane Sandy, the largest Atlantic hurricane on record, destroyed the main floor of their home. Fearing for their lives the Bello family retreated from the rising water to the second floor and watched six-foot plus waves rolling down the street just outside their window.

Photographer Donald Miralle spoke with Al Bello this afternoon and says Alís in great spirits as he guts the downstairs to itís timbers.... again. Bello says he is humbled by the support he has received so far.

Miralle and his wife Lauren started The Bello Family Relief Effort on facebook
http://www.facebook.com/TheBelloFamilyReliefEffort

I posted all the fund raising sources on my blog:

Then there is this from photographer Alexis Cuarezma:
You can now register for this Sunday's Workshop for only $100 and also help out a great cause. The proceeds from this workshop will go to directly to The Bello Family Relief Effort and help a great friend & mentor of mine & his family. Al Bello was one of the 1st people who genuinely and selflessly helped me out with my photography career. Because of him, I found out about Eddie Adams Workshop and applied, because of him, I went to NY, got assignments from the NY TIMES, LA TIMES and also met more amazing people who have helped me in my career.

The workshop takes place this Sunday, Nov. 11th in the San Francisco Bay Area.

->> Al has been a mentor of mine for years. That guy would do anything for his friends. I wish I could be there in person to help him out, but this is the best most of us can do. He was overcome with emotion when hearing that this fund had been setup for he and his family.

Thanks for sharing this on here and I hope some of you can donate and/or share the Facebook page for others to see!

->> Nice Story that the NPPA did about the Bello Family:

http://www.nppa.org/news/25264

I'm amazed and proud to see the outpouring of support from the photojournalist community to help one of their own. Al sent me this message to thank all of you who have supported his family the last couple days:

"Dear Friends,

I wanted to thank you all for your generous donations. The experience of having your house wrecked first from Hurricane Irene, putting it back together and then having it wrecked again by Hurricane Sandy is hard to explain. The last two years have been daunting. You all have helped my family get back on our feet again. We have a long way to go but you have made it easier to get going. I feel humbled and grateful to have all this support from you. Your inspiring emails have touched my family in many ways. We have learned that there are people out there who care about us in places all over the world. There are many emotions going through my head at the moment. I still can't believe it. I do know that I can't wait to get back to work and start taking real pictures again. Not just pictures of wrecked furniture and water lines around my home. I plan on seeing you all at some time in the future and will give you a hug and thank you personally. We are truly blessed to have a caring photo family out there. A million thank you's to everyone. Look forward to seeing you all soon.

The Bello Family"

->> Al Bello called today. He is lost for words on how to express his gratitude for all the help he has received from so many. The donations have allowed him to hire help. They have cleared out most of the debris caused by several feet of water damage inside his home. The place is totally gutted.

Last week an insurance adjuster finally showed up. Bello is deep into it but this week he is finally back out shooting a couple of assignments and is happy for it.

Hugs for everyone.
