100 Greatest Sports Photos of All Time...

| ->> Is it just me? Some great images there, but I sincerely doubt many of them would rank in the top 100 of all time... No disrespect meant to the folks at SI... |

| ->> I agree. There are some real sweet shots in there and some that don't quite do it for me. And I'm finding it hard to believe that none of Vince's T-S stuff or Don Miralle and Al Bello's underwater shots don't crack the top 100. |

| ->> Man, if SI would've just put "of the" after "100" we could all have avoided this debate... |

->> Amazing images! Strange ordering.
#34 is a fish.
#93 is my personal #1 and their #10 (and even #1) don't make my top 20.
No offense or disrespect intended. Sure was fun to look through! |

| ->> Ali/Liston is such a great moment in time. I love the Bobby Orr photo as well but I'm biased as I'm a big Bruin fan. Surprised they didn't use the ground level shot of Secretariat with Turcotte looking back at the other horses in the distance. I always liked that image. |

->> If top ten list generate discussion then top 100 list must generate 10 times the discussion.
I like the SI Top 100 photos.
Like all these lists there is a certain amount of bias.
But the SI list is a nice balance of recognizing their own photographers work with some others work included.
And while it is billed as the top 100 all time, it really is a blend of great sports photography and pictures of great athletes, although sometimes those two features are not present in the pictures. That's okay it is not SI's top 100 great athletes in great pictures.
While Jim Lavrakas' picture of the Trout inside the pike is a truly amazing picture that we all wish we had taken, how does it qualify for one of the top 100 Sports Pictures?
I'm going to go crazy Canuck on the Bannister picture (#56) too, It's an okay picture of Bannister from that race that took place during the Commonwealth games in Edmonton, but, the true moment from that race, dubbed the "Miracle Mile" was when Bannister passed John Landy in the final 90 metres. There is a picture of the moment with Bannister passing on the outside while Landy looks inside for Bannister, classic!

Back to the 100,
Best of all time have to be
100 - Ali/Williams
99 - Willie Mays
93 - Ali/Liston
80 - Bobby Orr
76 - Basilio / Demarco - This one is beautiful
One thing I love about the SI 100 is the number of wide shots, great atmospheric pictures! |

->> The Basilio/Demarco (76) is a rare, once in a lifetime image.....shot in 1955.....
I attended Basilios funeral yesterday......he was on the cover of SI 3 times in his career.....if you really want to see some of the best images ever that haven't really ever been seen, stop by Grazianos restaurant across the street from the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, NY....there are more pics there than at the HOF.....it unto iteself is a photographic shrine....!
Wasnt too impressed with some of the SI images......actually disappointed every week with what they choose as their "BEST".....
just saying... |
