Hi Nic, I ran outside my shop as they were going by above CONCORD California, pretty high up, and the sun was behind them.... It was a pretty cool site to see.

->> My buddy and I drove up from San Diego early this morning, and staked out a spot alongside LAX.

They weren't right on top of us, but we got 3 or 4 different flyovers from different directions, as they flew around to loop over different landmarks in the LA area, and then got a pretty close look as they came in for the final landing.

I am forever bummed that I never made it out for a launch, or even an actual space mission landing, for that matter. I was in St. Pete last May when the second-to-last mission went up, and I was SO tempted to blow off my appointments for that day and drive across the state and try to find out where to see the launch from, and even though I'm totally not the type of person to bail on commitments I've made, part of me is still kicking myself.

So, in the end, this was the next best thing, and the last and only opportunity for me to see one of the things off the ground.

Not as awe-inspiring a sight as a launch, I'm sure, but it was still VERY cool, and it was also heartwarming to see thousands of other folks around who came out to do the same thing, many bringing their kids with them, to see the last gasp of what used to be our space program, and the pride of the nation. Sigh.

Gonna go through the pics now... None will win any awards, I'm certain, but I was happy to have been there. I'll post some of the best and put a link up here.

Nice work by all the hard working shooters who made some great images yesterday.

Nothing as brilliant as the L.A. Times pano and gallery -- man, did those guys deliver -- or John's gorgeous shots from LAX, but traffic and parking were non-issues.
