Interesting stuff indeed. I know over the last 2 months or so I've been trying to embrace "phone photography" a little more just as a fun outlet for putting out photos on the fly. Times are always evolving and I have to applaud Brad for embracing it so effectively (among others who have done so as well).

Everyone's a critic, eh? And for the record, I like the photos and SI's use of them. But I guess this Koblin guy's not a fan.

Whatever.

->> Not taking anything away from Brad, he's a very talented photographer and he has more than proven his creds, but haven't some been railing against the very use of cell phones on sidelines and dugouts? But if one of out own does it, and gets paid, does it legitimize that very usage?
This is just a question and not a criticism.

->> Steven, an image is an image is an image. An artist who works with paint is not chastised because he uses his fingers to apply the paint because that is what children do. Or more appropriately, they aren't put down because of the quality/name of the brush but they are celebrated for the work they produce.

That said, I'd love to see what Brad could do with a "real" camera...

->> First let me say that the images Brad makes on his iPhone are amazing.

@Steven - I think the issue that people(media) have with iPhones is if the iPhone is the only tool they are using. Brad uses his iPhone to supplement his regular take. He is not trying to shoot action with it, but rather feature photographs.

Why should a photographer not be allowed to select whatever equipment that he or she wishes?

->> Congrats Brad! Glad to see that SI recognizes good work regardless of the medium and is giving it the great ride it deserves. You obviously have a comfortable rapport with the players and rocking an iPhone in the dugout must help greatly with that.

What has always struck me about your MLB Instagrams is that they are NOT larger-than-life depictions of superstar athletes. They are disarming portraits of rather ordinary men and remind me of baseball photos from the 40's and 50's in that regard.

Anyway, nice work!

I use Instagram too and yes I'll be doing the SAME thing during college football during warmups and pregame shots. Yes KIDS love this and it's HOT.. Like it or not Brad is a TREND setter and I THANK him for adding something to the craft because I would have NEVER thought about doing anything like this until I saw what he was doing.. THANK YOU BRAD!!!

->> I think there is a very positive point to be taken from this, one that we should all welcome. That is - it's not the camera, it's the eye behind it. How often has the "you must have a great camera, your pictures are great" idea been bemoaned here and on other photography sites. Well, seemingly half the adult population of the US has access to this camera. They ain't taking photos like this. (Bad grammar intentional.)

->> Great images is all that matters ... The tools used to acquire the images are merely coincidental ... It's the artist, not the tools that create memorable works ...

When someone walks ino the Louvre and views the Mona Lisa .... Is their initial instinct to dwell on what brand of canvas Leonardo used for the painting?

When visitors marvel at the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel ... Is their first thought pondering about the brand of brush that Michaelangelo used?

The answer is no ... They just appreciate what their eyes are beholding ...
