Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Photo Rights Agreement

->> Very Interesting It has been brought to my attention for this years 2012 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb some interesting info.

As Professional Photographers, you all might appreciate the lack of common disregard for the your craft being shown. Would you give up your photo rights with no compensation? I'm smart enough to not give away photos knowingly someone else would make $250 for "photo rights". No photo credit either?

Nevermind the fact that they had to go and pave the roads thanks to Sierra Club idiots. I could grumble all day about this.

I covered that race probably 10 years ago. You could make some cool photos there.

One piece of advice to anyone covering it is get there a couple of days early to get accumulated to the altitude.

The below info is from the link.

A picture is worth a thousand words: For Pikes Peak International Hillclimb its $250.00

Who is Eric Gearhart? I am a freelance automotive photographer. I shoot photos of racing, car shows and events. I do it for the love not the money. At the end of the day, I go in debt to shoot photos that others can enjoy. Plane tickets, hotel rooms, fuel, rental cars, food, camera gear, insurance, etc, etc. I make up these costs by submitting photos to magazines, online media outlets, race teams and even parts manufacture companies.

The new ruling for the 90th Annual running of Pikes Peak international Hill climb is that I pay $40 for media access, which doesn’t fare well with “true” entities -because they do not PAY for media.

However: this year: after submitting your application for media credentials you’re greeted with a “Photo Rights Agreement”. I do not own the rights to any photo that I shot, all photos shot by me are owned by PPIHC. For every photo that I submit and is used for “Commercial” purposes the media outlet owes pikes peak $250 and has to be approved by Pikes Peak for use. Do you really think we are making money on Pikes Peak?

Who Really Loses:

The Fans! That’s you! Few people I was covering:
-Summit Rally Team as they conquer the mountain. 4 months in the US on the Rally America Circuit they have the opportunity to take there Nissan 240sx up Pikes Peak!
-Travis Tollet: First quadriplegic to conquer the mountain.
-Savannah Rickli: 3rd time up the mountain and shes only 18!
-Greg Trachy: Multi-record setting Ducati Driver
-Tabitha Lohr and Cody Loveland: LoveFabs NSX

Those are just are just a few people I know and shoot for, I’m sure you’d also love to hear the stories of:
-Rhys Millen:
-Rod Millen:
-Ken Gushi: Lexus IS-F CCS-R
-Monster Tajima: Sports E-Runner

PPIHC Loses out on free coverage of many great stories.
Airlines lose, or the 15 gas stations I travel Past on a 3000 mile road trip.
7-Eleven loses: because that’s then only place open in Colorado Springs at 2:30a.m. before heading up the mountain.
Rainbow Lodge loses: Most entertaining lodging accommodations found in Colorado Springs
The list goes on.

My life at speed was not considered a media outlet for Pikes Peak. I am welcomed to shoot as a spectator, or for a single driver but will pay $40-$250 to Pikes Peak for the opportunity. To all those who shoot; be it pro photo or spectator. If you believe in what I stand for, please like, share or re-post on your media outlets. Maybe Pikes Peak International Hill Climb will see the error of their ways with no coverage in 2012.

Thanks you!

-Eric Gearhart
