I guess there are still a lot of suckers out there...

|->> I am finally retiring - I have now reached the time when I can start to withdraw funds from my IRA and figured I might as well start collecting my Social Security check while the system is still functioning - and spend some more time on the road in the RV...
I have been selling off some of my remaining gear and I am amazed how many scammers are still imposing their poor grammar, punctuation and stereotypical apologies for not being able to pick up the items personally - if they are still doing it, I guess there are still a lot of "suckers" out there...
In the space of an hour or so of posting the ads:
"email@example.com" in response to my ad for a D700 wrote:
"Hello, is the price negotiable or film?(sic) i hope there is no problem
with it? so i will like you to send me general close up pictures?
I figured I would play along for fun...
I sent a reply that the description in the ad. was accurate, there was already a photo in the ad and I did not have time to take any additional photos.
Ol' "Nelson Cole" responded:
"Good to hear back from you. I'm okay with the price and the condition.
Presently, i am out of town with my UNICEF TEAM to raise funds for the
Children Living with Malaria and i won't be able to come for the
inspection due to the nature of my work. Moreover, I would have loved
to call but our satellite server has been down in recent days which
restricts our calls. I will be paying you through PayPal as it is the
only Medium at which i can send Payment at the Moment.
I would appreciate if you email me with more pictures (if available)
too since i won't be be able to see this in person. And if you don't
have a PayPal account, It's pretty easy to set up a PayPal account at
www.paypal.com . it's just a few minutes away from signing up. it's
safe and secure for both Parties and i have been using PayPal to buy
and sell for years now without problems. Pls get back to me with your
PayPal email so i can proceed with the payment and contact the Pick up
Agent who will come for the Pick up of the item.
I will need these following details so i can proceed with the payment right away
1:Your PayPal e-Mail Address
2: Home Address
As soon as you get back to me with your PayPal email, I'll proceed
with full Payment. I look forward to reading from you soon."
Don't hold your breath "Nelson"...
His buddy "firstname.lastname@example.org" also sent an inquiry about the D700:
"do you still have it for sale?if so get back to me with the pics"
I told him that there was a photo in the ad...
I guess he forgot what Ad he was looking at because he responded about the D300 that I also have listed:
"Are you sure this is still in good working condition? I am buying this package
for my fiancee i would have love to come over to your place and see and also
pick it up myself but my job will not give me the chance to do that,i will
love to see the pics,i also want you to remove the item cause this
is exactly what i need.I will offer you $950 for the package including shipping
so get back to me with your pay pal email address so that i can make the
payment to your pay pal account first thing today.I need you to get back to
me as soon as possible it is very urgent. Awaiting for your quick response.
Sure "Maxwell Lopez" - i'll get right on it...
Meanwhile "email@example.com" wrote this IDENTICAL response to EACH of the ads for my D300 body , 14-24 f2.8 and 12-24 F4 lenses:
"Hello am interested in this camera, get back to me with your location and
more pictures if it is still available, you can text me at (424)
Oh brother, this is going to be fun...
You SSers are probably all up to speed on the scammers' tricks - but don't forget to remind all your gullible relatives to be careful out there - if they did not get away with it, they wouldn't be doing it.

|->> Ian, congratulations on your decision. My father told me once, "retirement is where it's at." I still have 8 years to go. I put a D700 online for sale a while back and the scammers were relentless. So be careful and again, enjoy your RV and new life. Jeff

I am well aware of the native country of most of these Bozos - nobody abuses the English language and structures sentences quite like a Nigerian scammer...
But it never hurts to remind people.

|->> I get a lot more scammers from Craigslist ads than I do SS ads. Funny how it always seems to be gmail addresses.
And on Craigslist, there are actually a lot more spammers than scammers. They will write something brilliant like "Is the item still available?" when they have no interest in buying it, only getting more email addresses to spam.

|->> I sold a lens recently that I made available only to SS members. One of the smoothest transactions I ever made.

|->> Its not just equipment. I was helping a friend look for apartments on CL recently. She received a response something to the effect of " I am currently on missionary work in Africa, but you can drive by the home and then secure the rental with an immediate payment via ...." . You get the idea.
