->> For those of you that didn't see it, SS member Vince LaForet had a fantastic image of the WTC lights last night that was shot for the AP and made the front page of my hometown paper,
the "Cincinnati Enquirer".
Come on Vincent, sharing is good......... |

->> Long long story... took 2 weeks of legwork and 3 days of preparation. I go to know the people who were running the towers of light, following a picture of the towers that ran on our front page last year. One of the guys in charge of towers really liked the picture so i was able to get him one of the plates to the NYT front page... his crew gave it to him a few months later, framed, during a ceremony. So when I went back to see them this year - they were incredibly helpful and went out of their way - even building a small platform in the center of the beams so that I could shoot over a white tent that covered the computer equipment, and that gave me a better view of Ground Zero.
Bob Deutsch and I figured the moon would come up around midnight and that it would compliment the photo. Canon CPS came through big time - as Dave Sparer was able to find a 1Ds last minute - I needed that camera because the chip is full frame and would allow for the full coverage of the 14mm (unlike the 1D that has a 1.3x magnification due to a smaller chip.)
In the end it worked out great. Our paper didn't use the photo quite as well as they could have - but it seems other papers did. You should all check out Deutsch's great picture that ran on their front page. If anyone has copies of the papers that ran the pic - I'd love to see them posted or have them e-mail them. I'm sure the crew at the Towers of light would love to see them as much as me.
Cheers - and thanks for all the kind words.
Vince
P.S. the frame was made at 100 ASA, on a Canon EOS 1Ds, with a 14mm 2.8 lens, on a 2 second exposure at 5.6. |

->> Vincent;
Your work does not stop to amaze me. Beautiful pictures.
100's of pros and amateur shooters all trying to get that key shot and in the end they were all on the outside looking in, while you were on the inside looking out. That is a lot of photographers to kick all at once!!!
And a 35 meg raw file to boot!!! |

->> Vince, you suck! JUST KIDDING ;)
I thought I had the coolest Tower of Lights shot from last year (#10 on my page), but you just kicked my a$$.
Beautiful photos, I would also love to get one if you make them available. Are the lights going to be up for awhile this year, or just the 11th? |

| ->> Mike - unfortunately the lights were only on for one night... I think they should consider making this a permanent exhibit as it's one of the most beautiful memorials I've ever seen... apparently it's not as much a question of cost as it is of finding a space and paying for security... V |

->> Forgot something;
Those 9/11 anniversary lights that beautifully and which are a power reminder of the twin towers were designed and produced in Edmonton, Alberta Canada.
We are along way from ground zero here in Edmonton yet many of us felt the pain of that day. This was and is a worldwide community we live in.
And we will meet in November in California.........
I am looking very forward to this. |

->> I've seen news articles about the potential environmental problems of having the lights on year round. What I remember is that scientist don't know if the lights would upset the north/south bi-annual bird migration. It's a hypothosis by some experts on how birds use star light to navigate at night.
But purely on the emotional responce, I think if they were on all the time they'd lose their special appeal. Once a year, like a search light pointed to heaven looking for those who died makes the display very powerful to me. |

| ->> Great picture Vince. And thanks for the plug Brad. When I saw that picture pop in to our system around 6 PM Pacific time, I personally walked it over to our page designer. I was fortunate to have a really talented designer working that night and he played it well. I knew just by looking at the picture that anyone could not just walk in to Ground Zero and make that image. This once again proves that pushing the shutter release button accounts for only about 20 percent of what we do. Nice work. |

->> Vince,
You made it as far as the Arizona Republic! I think the weekend edition did a recap of all the rememberances, and yours was in there. My wife actually pointed it out just yesterday' after I showed her your hidden gallery the other night.
It only ran about 5 inches longm two columns. I'll send it out to you if you're interested.
I'd love to trade you for a signed copy,m but I really dont feel tha I have anythign worthy. |
