->> Can you imagine driving around town in a 950 horsepower Shelby Mustang.
I just finished watching Dave Despain's documentary on the Shelby legend and Carroll Shelby stated he wanted to drive the 1000 horsepower Mustang to its highest speed. He's 88 years old and still running Shelby American. |

though somewhat off-topic, after reading the comments, nobody seems to care. in fact, many suggested the USA Today should shift focus to something that actually matters.
seeing that it's not a news picture, but an ad, i see the public's point. |

disagree.
i'm pretty sure the 1000HP mustang can indeed, uselessly raise it's front wheels off the ground on a drag strip. that a USAt photo editor with a keen eye spotted the post in this image means very little. |

Sure.
Carol Shelby made a special Cobra back in the 60s, Bill Cosby got one, someone else got the other. It had twin superchargers on a Ford 427 V-8, a specially built three speed automatic, and did zero to sixty in 2.8 seconds.
I wanted one then, I want one now. |

->> "Why not just add wings to it and say it can fly. I agree with Willis. It's false advertising. Faking a photo is unethical."
good grief. you wouldn't add wings and say it could fly because that would just be stupid.
you might hand out the image in question because the car CAN lift the front wheels off the ground, and for those who dig that kind of thing, it looks cool. it's simply not false advertising. faking a photo is only unethical in journalism. the USAt should probably not be publishing handout photos anyway.
frankly, the more thought i waste on it, the more ridiculous the story seems. they wrote a self-righteous article on how a photo editor did his job by spotting poorly-executed post production in a product image. they published this un-newsworthy piece to show it's readership how exceptionally ethical and competent it's news staff is. mcgruff the crime dog sniffed out an irregularity in a photo discipline where irregularities are the norm.
don't over-think this one. it's pretty black and white. it's not a news photo.
false advertising? red bull really does give you wings. swear to god. |

On the other hand...this is a manufacturer-provided shot. It's commercial and, yes, advertising. If you think that product shots distributed by manufacturers or marketers are treated by same with the same "ethics" as photojournalists treat their work, think again.
The ethical lapse here is by the outlets that published the photos without questioning them, if there was any at all. (This is why most journalistic outlets don't run photos that are handed out, as they have no control over authenticity.) |

->> MIke-
Okay, so you like Mustangs, we get it, but you're losing sight of the argument. It is still false advertising. The car under current configurations (shown in the photo) can not lift it's front tires off the ground as shown in the photo. The car would need wider rear tires (think Z06) along with a higher octane fuel (~97+ at >1500 feet elevation) and said tires would still exhibit torque ripple.
Lifting the wheels off the ground is a tremendous feat and this is saying it's a piece of cake.
You're other argument about "redbull giving you wings" is a slogan, not an advertisement.
Does delta "really love to fly and it show"? Of course not. They love raping non-medallions for fifty large per bag and two G's if you want a seat with a back on it.
Is BMW the ultimate driving experience? I'm pretty sure that honor goes to Bugatti.
Is a diamond really forever? No, because an inanimate object without a verb can not be measured by time... Even if you said it "lasts forever" you'd still be wrong. Quantum Singularity and Big Rip theorists say that either option will occur and both result in the atomic destruction of the diamond....
Those are slogans... Not corporate handout photos of a car that can only drive in a straight line magically lifting it's wheels off the ground while standing still. |

if by "mustangs" you mean the free-roaming horse of the North American west that first descended from horses brought to the Americas by the Spanish, then yes, i am indeed, not opposed to mustangs.
otherwise, i disagree with your entire post.

@Mike, really, still standing your ground on this issue? It IS a LIE! These hand out photo aren't given out as advertising (sorta), but given out to accompany articles (journalism) on the car. Sure the company is doing so to "advertise" their new car, but in an editorial fashion. |

not anymore, stew. i am strictly working with common sense, whereas standing my ground on this issue would require real 'passion.'
common sense indicates that shelby and everyone associated with the old man is a lyin' SOB. that photo is a lie and i am a penis for not applying to it the basic rules of photojournalism ethics.
excuse the lapse. |

BTW, how much of the snow in your SportsShooter portfolio did you clone to make the drifts look higher? You are a freelancer and your photos are your product, so by your logic it is just fine to fake it and pass it off as reality. |

->> Mike- (IR to fist post after mine) Then I can't have an intelligent conversation with you. I'm sorry.
Pat- Test drove an M3, M5, 645 and something else.... I couldn't do it and went with another European car. It's always subjective and I wanted performance and handling over bad design, lack of power and lack of engineering discipline. I wanted one to. I really did. I wanted a beamer all my life, but I went with something that (degovernored) had a sack when I was pushing past 145 and didn't want it to crap it's pants when I cut over to my exit. Have you ever tried a double lane change at the prescribed 137 MPH limit in an M5? It's like the ass-end wants to wrap around and kiss the badge. It's a beautiful, powerful car, I'm not denying that. I just have standards. |

Back to the topic... If this were a magazine ad, I don't think anyone would care about the picture. However, as many folks have stated, this picture was sent to be used in a story, not an advertisement. |

->> Since this went off topic several posts back with car talk, I'll play. There are several myths to be cleared up in here. 1.) Weight and octane have nothing to do with it. You can't pull wheels on street tires, not to mention the front suspension isn't even unloaded. 2.) BMW's tend to be the ultimate driving machine only for those who never lift their own hood. |

No wait, I've got it! Torque Ripple was the name of a bad-boy motorcycle cop on an episode of "Streets of San Francisco". He wore plaid pants with a dark brown leather jacket when he was off-duty, as I recall he really annoyed the hell out of Karl Malden.
