New iPad or iPad 2

->> So do I get the iPad 2 that has a price drop or do I get the New iPad. Main use is to view photos on site and show clients. Any thoughts.

->> Oh I understand that, but should I wait or get the iPad 2 now? Just wondering if the current iPad 2 users are happy with the results or are you going to get the New iPad based on the changes.

->> New iPad and the iPhoto iPad App looks quite compelling. With the faster CPU and graphics processors, it would smoke the previous iPad 1 and 2.

Also the photos you plan to display will look that much better on the retina display.

->> If it's mainly to show clients photos on site, I'd go with the iPad 2. While the new iPad is going to have an upgraded screen, photos still look great on the iPad 2.

You can get a refurbished 64GB iPad 2 (WiFi only) for $150 less than an 64GB iPad 3. Used iPad 2s will be even less.

To me, the only reason to get an iPad 3 would be to take advantage of the 4G connectivity.

->> I agree ... if you are intending to use the iPad as a portable portfolio, handle email and general internet surfing and the new retina display isn't calling out your name ... the iPad1 or the iPad2 would be more than sufficient ... OTOH ... if you are seeking to possibly replace the duties of a laptop or netbook, the new iPad could quite possibly fit that bill, more so than any other tablet has done thus far ... but as Mark points out ... you may want to wait a few week or more to gather more feedback from the inaugural adopters ... it wouldn't be the first time a new device experienced some growing pains.

Too low res for my tastes.

Personally, I'd wait.

->> I love the iPad 2 (using it to type this) but, if you're sole/main purpose is to show images to clients, that new retina display will be unbelievable... it certainly is on my iPhone. And if you can generate more income by better displaying your images, that's worth the price of admission IMHO.

->> Chris ... if your images don't look good on the iPad 2 ... it may have more to do with how you size and prep the images you view on it ... the screen offers 132 ppi which is quite a bit more resolution than many desktop monitors ... so I always make sure I set that resolution or better for my portfolio images ... normally, 1024 on the long edge at 264 ppi ... makes for larger jpeg files, but the images look great, even if you zoom in on a portion of the image ... but Tim is right ... the retina display should blow the previous models out of the water ...

->> Butch, I don't use it for portfolio work.

I'm just talking in general terms. I look at a big high res screen off a MacPro most of the time, and an iPad2 just isn't the same. I find it hard to read.

The new display looks pretty nice, however...

does it get too hot for you after a certain amount of time or is it not that bad?

->> Official reports from sites with access to thermal scanners are reporting it runs 10 degrees hotter than the iPad 2. Temperatures were taken after both devices ran high intensity CPU tasks for a few hours, so most of us won't notice the heat at all I'm guessing.

Not sure why everyone is making a big issue of 10% heat increase? The late Mr. Steve Jobs had a vision and Apple made it possible - the iPad heats your coffee too! Think out of the box :D

The main value for me with the 3rd Gen iPad....4G! Faster data download and upload.
