The Passing of Anthony Shadid

->> It is with great regret that I report, via the New York Times, that the two-time Pulitzer Award winning journalist, Anthony Shadid, died of an asthma attack Thursday in Syria while on assignment. Shadid, who did not have permission to be in the country from the Syrian government, was carried out by New York Times photojournalist Tyler Hicks, into Turkey.
As the Photo Editor of the college newspaper where Mr. Shadid got his start, The Daily Cardinal at the University of Wisconsin, I am saddened to hear this news, as is much of the journalism world, and beyond. I am about to go in to the office on my night off and spend time with the family who has lost one of their own. He was an inspiration to many in our office over the years, and though I never met him, as a Middle East Studies major who speaks Arabic, I always looked to him for an example of not only how to work as a journalist, but live as a person.
Anthony Shadid was 43. |

->> If you really sit and think about all of the stories that Shadid will never get a chance to write then you start to get a sense of how much of a loss his passing is, not only to the journalism community, but to the world.
Shadid was the tip of the journalism spear.
It is selfless, thorough and brilliant work like his, and Hicks', that keep me a NY Times subscriber. |

->> As someone who has spent a lifetime dealing with asthma, I can't tell you how tragic it is to have someone who impacted the world as much as Anthony Shadid die of a asthma attack. With the treatment options available today to control asthma, it's really sad that this happened.
Thank you, Anthony, for bringing clarity to a part of the world where clarity is often in exceptionally short supply. Rest in peace. |
