So how do you make it work-able

->> I started a thread about what cars make good photogrpaher cars and mobile offices.

Now I'd love to find out what others have done to make their cars more work friendly.

Someone asked that I share my magic arm laptop holder. I will put those up on my page soon. Also, I've hardwired my AC inverter and put a switch on my dash.

What have you done?

->> Well Rob, you've done more than me. I have a power inverter in my car and that's about it. My car doubles as a ladder when needed. When editing pix in the car, I just put the laptop on my lap.

I have seen special made desks for the car for those people that work out of their car. Similar to what the police use.

for purpose-made consoles and desks.

Thought about putting one in my truck, but the prices scared me off.

Rob, like James in the other thread, would like to see the magic arm laptop desk.

->> I mounted a 2x4 to the hump on the passenger side and then attached a small wall mount for a television to it. The laptop fits on the platen perfectly and the arm of the mount can swing out of the way when driving or right to you when using it.

The fixture is similar to those in police cars that cost a couple hundred dollars. The television mount from Home Depot cost me $29 and the wood was leftover scrap.

->> Gallery of my car can be seen here: http://www.sportsshooter.com/angusm/car/

I drive a 2011 Nissan X-Trail (Don't think they are available in the US)

On the inside I have (Vaguely top to bottom):
> Uniden 396T Scanner wired to a remote head to catch breaking news
> GME 40 Channel UHF CB Radio, also usually carry a couple of portable (hand held) radios to pass off to people in other vehicles if travelling together in separate vehicles.
> Eclipse AM/FM Radio and GPS unit (Came stock with the car)
> iPad cradle, (also have iPhone cradle on the opposite side now too)
> Power Inverter hard wired in the glove box (and a spare!!)

I primarily use the iPad for it's superior mapping as well as general web browsing and transmitting images (Both only whilst parked!) I did think about laptop mounts but this works nicely as the bracket has a quick release so its very low profile when I don't need the iPad.

I have a set of Amber LED warning lights in the front and back of my car, these get very occasional use when parked dangerously on a highway or whilst driving through smoke at a bush fire. I also have a UniVisor (
http://www.theunivisor.com/) marked up as "MEDIA" it has helped a couple of times to convince police officers to allow me to park just inside a police road block where no other parking is available at a scene.

The nudge bar acts as a step (Hence the black non-slip tape) and also now has a pair of spotlights for long nighttime highway drives.

I have included the image of the bed to show how I can get a single sized mattress in which is great for a couple of shoots I have done a long way from any accommodation. I also have a 36L fridge in the boot (Trunk) now too.

->> I have a cell antenna on my car to connect to my MiFi. I was pretty surprised how much it helped. I get a couple extra bars which is useful when you are sending photos from a small town in the middle of nowhere.

This is the antenna I have:

->> Oh, and to make our lawyers happy.... UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU EVER ATTEMPT TO EDIT, TONE or CROP IN A MOVING VEHICLE. Although uploads and ftp's can be done at speeds below 65 mph :-)
