New life for small weekly papers??

->> Interesting article by Jeff Manning of the Oregonian on Rim Publications aquiring weekly papers to save costs on posting legal notices with a side advantage of keeping the small weeklies alive.

A bit more on a local news blog site run by a former publisher/editor for one of the papers involved.

Good or bad for small journalism? I'm not sure yet as I have seen both positives and negatives from the one paper I am familiar with.

->> Bad.

Bad.

Bad.

This is a disgusting turn of events.

In order for these newspapers to survive people have to get thrown out of their homes, and if these papers have minimal circulation and minimal distribution the idea that the notices are "public" is BS.

All it will prove is that you can print up 5000 copies of something, brand it as a newspaper, and rake it the $$$.
