Best Things You Learned with Your Photography in 2011
Nic Coury, Photographer
Monterey | CA | | Posted: 12:24 PM on 12.20.11
->> On the heels of the best purchases, what did you learn from your photography, or maybe just in general, this year?

Me:

1.) Never let the client know there is a problem. As far as they're concerned, everything is going smoothly.

2.) News is often not nice to the people involved.

3.) Take more time for yourself when you can, to stay sane and have fun.

->> Flatulence is never acceptable in front of the client.

Monopods are great back scratchers, but remember to lower the rubber around the spike of your Gitzo.

"Buttons aren't toys."

If you find a potato chip in your front shirt pocket that likely fell in there as you ate "lunch" while driving to an assignment, make sure no one sees you eat it when you find it later. And if people are watching, try not to enjoy the chip so visibly.

Sobbing is no more an effective way to get out of a traffic ticket than telling the officer you work for the paper.

"Do you know who I am!?" doesn't work, either.

->> I have been thinking a lot about two tweets from Jake Stangel, a really cool West Coast photographer I have been following for a bit this year:

"Assistants and aspiring photographers: Work hard, be punctual + always on point, do what needs to be done, don't be a slouch, and work hard...if you can't be all of these things, all of the time, you're not gonna make it. I assure you."

I also learned how to make something from nothing, work on a small budget and treat every assignment like it was my dream one.

->> I learned how to slow down and "see" much better. I thought I knew what a picture story was, but the Missouri Photo Workshop was an eye opener. While the Sports Shooter Academy is probably a great experience, MPW was exactly what I needed at this point in my life. I definitely learned to be a much better visual storyteller. And, as much as I learned about myself, I learned a ton from all of the people at the workshop - students and faculty included.

That I know 100-400 newspaper photogs whose images kick the ass of those same folks mentioned above every DAY....day in and day out ON deadline.

oh...and that some people (see above) shouldn't post if they've been drinking heavily, you'll get a lot of "huh's" or "WTF's"

Happy Holidays!
