2011 Worst purchase of the year
Brad Barr, Photographer

->> I decided to make this one its own thread rather than muddy the good waters of the best purchase thread. I've saved hundreds of dollars in the past by reading others worsts and avoiding them...so lets all share what didnt quite live up to its billing.

For me thats easy...

The PW TT5 and Mini system...never quite got past the point of being flaky...especially when used with an on camera unit as well. Turns out the PCB system for 1/3rd the price does everything i needed it too. (Manual is more consisitent anyway)

Sigma 120-300 2.8 OS....great range...but far to slow on the AF to keep up with any sports. When i returned it the dealer called sigma...they said i was lucky to have gotten 2 sharp in any 10 shot burst using nikon d3???? WTF?? Great answer mr tech support. Blame it on Nikon. Happily replaced it with Nikon 300 2.8 AFSII, which somehow manages quite nicely :-)

But at $1200 weighed against the amount of times that I used it shows it was a really bad investment.

I would have been better off buying a 7D body to complement my 1D and 5D.

->> I was invited on a bird photography trip to Peru by a very good photographer, with whom I've always wanted to shoot and learn a few things. The focus of this trip (one particular rare species of hummingbird) is not normally my thing, but I figured the opportunity to shoot with the guy was too good to pass up. Over the course of trip prep, deposits, etc. I came to learn that the outfit handling all the logistics is incredibly unprofessional and non-responsive, but I stuck with it (again, the opportunity, etc.).

Fast forward well past the refund deadline and the other shooter suddenly couldn't go due to personal issues. So now I'm locked into an expensive trip pursuing a subject that doesn't really interest me, being led around the eastern slope of the Andes by a potentially-unreliable tour operator.

The trip is coming up in a few weeks and I intend to make the most of it. Could be really fun, but it also has the potential for being a disastrous investment.

->> the gary fong lightsphere domes. i keep losing and replacing them, thinking that the curved plastic thingie will actually stay put in its socket with the latest funkyass fix i've come up with to secure it. imagine it popping out and rolling into traffic or flying off and spinning comically and loudly at the worst possible time, like a diaphragm skittering across a bathroom floor. yet, not only do i keep losing them, i keep replacing them (the domes, not the diaphragms), convinced that this NEXT time it will stay, it really will. i have to give up. they do not stay in place. the system is a great idea but fails (for me) in the day-to-day press of regular use. unless someone has some good ideas to share.

->> Some people love the Canon 7D, I got frustrated with mine. Sold it and now I have no more frustration. I love my Nikon D3 cameras.

Second worst purchase. I bought two SanDisk Extreme Pro 16GB cards because they were on sale. After I bought them, I did some research and found that some of them have bad sectors. Perhaps this was the reason for the sale. So far one card is bad and I have to return it. The second card has had no problems, knock on wood. I sent an email to SanDisk because they have to send you the proper info in order to return it. I haven't heard from them in two weeks now. I guess it's time to call them.

Everything that I have bought from Amvona.com (I think they went out of business), has been of poor quality. I'm done with them.

Blank white hub Memorex CD disks. For some reason, when I try to burn on them, I hear a terrible noise coming from my laptop's burner. No other disks make the same noise. I wonder if they are out of round or unbalanced or something. I won't be buying them any more.

->> Would have to be the Tamron 28-75/f2.8 (current model). I had one of the original versions 7-8 years ago and, aside from a tendency to backfocus that required a trip back to the factory, it was a real gem. When I made the jump to full-frame this year, I weighed the 300% more-expensive Nikon 24-70 in my mind and thought easy choice.

Sadly, THIS Tamron (I sold my first one a few years ago), while generaly sharp and contrasty, had the weirdest green flare in the frame whenever arena lights were in the frame (which is almost all the time in the venue I shoot most frequently).

->> Regret buying a refurbished Dell PC. I got a really good deal on it and was able to spend the savings on some extra components I wanted. It works well enough but no matter how much hardware you throw at the Windows OS it's still the Windows OS. Just tired of the little quirks that you always have to debug with Windows systems.

I thought about getting a Mac Pro when I got the Dell and should have stuck with that thought. I'm hoping Apple refreshes the Mac Pro line this Spring. I'm seriously thinking of getting one.

Just saying....

You can buy the $200 saw and regret it everyday you use it and replace it with another and another and another OR you can just buy the $1,000 saw once and be happy for the rest of your life with its excellent performance. Same thing with photo gear. But it once, buy it right, have no regrets.

Ditto on the TT5, ugh! I got that replaced with the Multimax and now I'm wondering why I didn't listen to others who said this device wasn't ready for prime time. I lost connection with my remote from 25ft away AND the Einsteins with MC2. Plus II had no issues firing both flawlessly. Props to PW for doing the replacement with no questions asked.

You can keep it in your pocket or pouch until you need to change things, then just make the changes and put it back, all while the tiny little transmitter works every shot. Oh....and the transmitter and einstein receiver are incredibly priced compared to pw's...even dumb pw's..

->> A Canon 7D and a 1D Mark III. I have never had so many out of focus frames. I wanted to like the 7D, but I just couldn't get it to do what I told it to. So I sold it for a Mark III. I can't say the Mark III is any better. I am back to using my trusty 1D Mark II Ns for 90% of what I shoot.

I should have just shelled out for a 1D Mark IV. It would have cost me less in the long run.

->> A Motorola Droid 2 instead of an I-Phone. The guy in the store swore it was a better operating system. It dropped calls repeatedly, most often when I was on with a client. It would randomly dial and text people I haven't talked to in years (very embarrassing). I would lay it down on the table and watch it dial all by itself. I'm stuck with the stupid thing for another year and a half unless I want to shell out $500.

Margaret, I'm not sure that the iPhone is the panacea you think it is.

->> At work we purchased a Dell UltraSharp U2410 Monitor for photo editing that turned out to be somewhat of a dud. No matter how hard we try we just cant seem to get the thing calibrated accurately. Others have also had issues with this monitor and I wish I would have heeded their advice.

Also, this is pretty specific, but this summer I built a new PC based around a Asus M4A89GTD Pro/USB3 Motherboard. At first everything worked great and I was extremely happy, but gradually problems started popping up to the point that it will no longer boot. At this point I'm just sick of trying to figure out what the problem is and will probably end up building a new system.

Maybe I could use it for some sportraits.

->> We bought a Verizon 4G hot spot device. It worked one week, died, and while on the road I took it and the paper work to a Verizon store where I was shooting. The mgr told me he could not help me out because I bought the device at a "Retail" Verizon store, not a "Corporate" store like the one I was standing in. The mgr would not even have his tech guy look at it! I called the "retail" store, they just gave me the same tech 800# that would not pick up for the last three days. So...............after 5 months of fighting a $300 bill for something that did not work, no returned phone calls from local mgr, and 5+ hours of phone calls the first week of 12/2011, it turns out Verizon owed me $27.00. Got the check yesterday.
