->> Caleb,
The area of Creede is one of the most beautiful parts of Colorado, hands down. It's one of my favorites in the state. Just east of the town of South Fork is a forest access road to Summitville that makes about a 30 mile loop through part of the San Juan range and ends just west of South Fork on the highway that goes west, up and over Wolf Creek Pass. You'll pass through aspen forests that are starting to turn gold, red and orange right now. The next few weeks are peak time for that. Summitville is an active gold mine that is at about 11,000 feet. It's a great drive that will make you start humming John Denver songs when you are done. You'll feel like you are on top of the state. There are back roads and trail everywhere within an hour of Creede. Bring a fishing pole because you are at the headwater of the Rio Grande River. Excellent fishing this time of year. Take a drive over Wolf Creek Pass and into the valley area near Pagosa Springs and Durango. Again, many, many roads and waterfalls, streams and mountain lakes. in this area. Just pick a dirt road and you won't be dissappointed. About two hours east is another one of my favorite things in Colorado. The Great Sand Dunes. Go around dusk and you'll flip at the sunset as it reflects off the dunes with Mount Blanco against them. Way to many things going on in this area for me to explain, but I really love the area around South Fork which is about 45 minutes away. Hope I could help and you'd better bring warm clothes. It just snowed about 4-6 inches in the high country with another storm on the way this weekend. Let me know if there is anything else I could help you with. Bryan |

->> Hey Caleb,
Bryan's got it right, this is one of the cool places in a state full of cool places. One of my favorite places goes north off of the blacktop just east of town. This is about a twenty or more mile dirt road that goes to the Wheeler Gelogic area. They call it the "City of Gnomes" for all it's weird and beautiful rock formations. Ask locally if you don't see it on the map, they will know. It is right up against the divide and full of lakes, deer and the Elk are bugleing right now. The last time I was there it was a medium bumpy dirt road. Be careful of the weather for the driving and clothes.
Bryan, thanks for putting me on to this site, it's a great place. We should go on a mountain ramble some time.
