OT: Visiting Amsterdam
Myung Chun, Photographer
Los Angeles | CA | USA | Posted: 12:29 PM on 11.13.11
->> To fellow photographers who live or have been to Amsterdam. I'll be visiting some time next year for a few days. Trying to create an itinerary of (good) places to eat and interesting places to visit. Travel around the city will be by foot and by taxi.

Thanks in advance.

Google helps too.

Amsterdam is a great city BTW. One afternoon in winter the weather went from sunshine to heavy rain to sleet to snow and back to sunshine all within the space of 20 minutes and I was NOT in a coffee shop at the time.

->> Myung,

Amsterdam is a great walking city but watch out for the cyclists. They have the right of way (or believe they do) in the many cycle lanes and will run you down as soon as look at you.

If you're into art the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum are great.

For traveling within the city there is an extensive tram and metro system (
http://www.gvb.nl/english/Pages/default.aspx).

Lots of people understand English but a Please (Alstublieft) and Thank You (Dank U) never hurt and shows your respect for the natives.

->> I would recommend renting a bike and get around the city that way. My wife and I went and it's really the best way to get around. Like Jim said, bikes pretty much have the right of way, and it's much faster (and cheaper) to rent a bike and tour that way. With that, I would use a backpack or messenger bag to carry camera gear.

Rembrandt House Museum

If they still smoke like chimneys over there (I was there in 2004), dine anywhere there is outdoor seating. :)

Careful in the red light district, they can get a bit aggressive towards folks taking photos.

I agree with renting a bike, it's a great way to get around and act like a local.

->> Hey Myung... I used to live in Amsterdam... places to eat include Rainarai - http://www.rainarai.nl/ - one of my favorites while I was there... I went to the one on the Prinsengracht... it was just down the street from me, and very close to the Anne Frank House... if you go to the Anne Frank House go early! They pretty much always have a long line, and the tour is shorter than the time it takes to get through the line.

Be sure to get some pancakes (they are called Pannekoeken and similar to crepes... you can have them sweet or savory)
http://www.pancake.nl/ also near the Anne Frank House (all of the above places are located in a section of the city called the Jordaan). Also there are little pancakes (pofertjes) If you are willing to spend some cash on a really great meal check out De Kas... they are located in a converted green house and they grow their own vegetables, herbs and edible flowers plus serve locally sourced meat. It's really a fabulous experience - they usually have a set menu based on what is freshest that day. http://www.restaurantdekas.nl/the-menu - be sure to make reservations first...

For Dutch food and a fun atmosphere check out Moeders -
http://www.moeders.com/pagina.php?m=14&p=14 For a good lunch/breakfast cafe check out Aan de Amstel http://www.aan-de-amstel.nl/ ... it's on the Amstel river and I discovered it when I lived in the De Pijp area on a house boat for a month... great food, friendly people and if it's nice out a pleasant little outdoor seating area - just be sure to bring your Dutch to English dictionary. While in De Pijp also check out the Albert Cuypmarkt - the city's biggest open-air market. I'm not sure but I think Moeders is also in De Pijp.

Some tips... I do not suggest traveling by taxi - walking or bike riding is definitely the best way to go. The trams are also quite easy to navigate and a g-d send when the weather is nasty. Be sure if you are traveling with a backpack to carry it in front of you, especially in some of the seedier and more touristy places in town. If you do decide to check out the coffee shops (coffee shops are places that tend to have terrible coffee but really cater to marijuana smokers while cafes sell good coffee) avoid some of the more touristy ones particularly the Bulldog in leidseplein. Keep in mind that each coffee shop has it's own feel. One touristy one to check out that is quite famous is Barney's. It's an experience! If you are lost ask the 'dealer' for help with the menu. :-) Marijuana smoking is NOT allowed in the streets or in most places. You are allowed to do it in private homes (up to the owner) and at coffeeshops - so keep that in mind. Also you are not allowed to take photos in the red light district. They definitely frown on it... and you may be approached by some big burly dudes if you pull out your camera, so be aware!

Museums are plentiful and fabulous! Since this is a photo site I will mention FOAM first - it's the photo museum and it is world class. Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh museum are both terrific as well as the Rembrandt Huis... the Amsterdam historical museum and Jewish historical museum are also great. I particularly loved the stedelijk as well. Anne Frank is a good one, especially if you have an interest in it... but I found it to be a tad disappointing because most of the things there are replicas instead of the originals. Also I suggest a canal boat tour because it can be quite informative and you get to see a lot.

Finally... Juliann mentioned the whole smoking like chimneys thing... while many people do tend to be smokers (cigarettes not marijuana - the Dutch actually don't tend to be the ones to indulge in the green) smoking in public places - indoors - was outlawed in 2008 while I was living there so no worries about that!

Some helpful terms - 'plein' = square, gracht = canal, kaas = cheese, 'lekker' = delicious (this term is most often referring to food - if you use it towards a woman it can be misconstrued!) and much more. Most of the people living in Amsterdam tend to at least have some limited English though.

Hope this is helpful!

Cheers,

Talya

PS. Oh yes... have a great time! I'm totally jealous and miss being there.

David -- That's a bummer but fortunately I don't indulge.

Paul -- I do not know what Marcellus Wallace looks like. Am I allowed to Google?

->> Good to hear about the ban on smoking indoors, it was miserable when I was there, you'd open a door to a restaurant and smoke would just billow out. We ate in outdoor cafes a lot and it was March. Talya's not kidding about the bouncers in the Red Light district, my traveling companion was a video editor for NBC, wearing her NBC jacket and taking video. We were lucky to make it out of there. LOL

Glad I could be of help! I'm happy to be your travel guide... I simply require a roundtrip ticket to Amsterdam - I'm confident I could find my own housing! :-) Have a great time, as I said I'm totally jealous... let me know how it goes!

Cheers from Houston!
