AP Photographer Ed Reinke
Mark Cornelison, Photographer
Lexington | KY | U.S.A. | Posted: 9:17 AM on 10.13.11
->> Kentucky AP photographer Ed Reinke is in a coma after a long fall at the Kentucky Speedway last week where he hit his head. He suffered a bad head injury which caused bleeding on the brain, and brain swelling. He is still in the hospital in Northern Kentucky fighting for his life. Please remember Ed in your thoughts right now. He is a great guy!

->> Reinke update:

Ed is still in a coma. The backstory is, Ed was covering a race at the Ky. Speedway. He apparently fell off a ladder or platform said to be about 12 ft off the ground and hit his head. No one can confirm what he fell off of. I believe he was air lifted to the hospital.

He was fairly responsive for the first few days then it is believed he may have had a heart attack in his sleep and has been unconscious ever since. His family has been by his side since it happened and he is on a ventilator right now breathing slightly above it.

There is no quick answer to how it is going to turn out. A lot of people have expressed a lot of love for the man. Keep that coming.

->> Wow what terribly sad news.

Many many years ago - when Ed was at the Cincinnati Enquirer and I was a student at OSU - Ed gave a presentation to a journalism class I was in - and after hearing him speak about communicating visually and seeing his work - I went out the next day and bought my first 20mm lens - a used (but clean) Nikkor 20mm f-3.5 He was inspirational and had a huge influence on me at a time when I was just learning "how to see".

My best wishes to Ed and his family.

He is now resting comfortably in a local Hospice Center and continues to receive exceptional treatment. The boys and I thank everyone for all the love and support we have received.
