->> Steve Jobs was more than a great businessman and visionary. What Steve Jobs was to me was a person who dared to dream; a person who didn't need market research, didn't need a group of MBAs, nor a way to make it cheaper. Steve Jobs ultimately knew that by being different, by building to his vision and his standards, he could change the world. Thank you Steve, for being the heart and soul of Apple, the driving force of Pixar, but most importantly, the person who not only dared to dream, but allowed us to do things we never dreamed possible. Rest in peace, Steve.

Apple did similar bold steps but the steps came much more often. Ditching the Apple ][, 5.25" floppy disks, 3.5" floppy disks, parallel ports, OS9, PowerPC, Flash on mobile, PC Card slots, rack servers, Final Cut Studio and more. Only Steve Jobs could have pulled-off each of these to move the company forward as fast as Apple has moved. Each has left users screaming but bold moves takes a bold person and that's what Steve Jobs was.

Steve Jobs was the first and best one name IT CEO Rock Stars of all time. He was engaging, energetic, a visionary, had an ego as big as all outdoors but not rude, and to someone who was a couple years younger than he was and an employee at the time, had time to say hi and have a conversation just for the heck of it. Steve you will be missed. Thank you for the great memories, the great times, the great tech, and for a great future for "the rest of us" God Bless, RIP Steve.

He had three names, Steven, Paul and Jobs.

"He was engaging, energetic, a visionary, had an ego as big as all outdoors but not rude"

Not rude? He was famous for being rude and abusive to his employees and colleagues.

Jim, you're right - the guy was in your face tough, demanding and ok .. rude.

Funny thing was, is that people that worked for him were, for the most part - willing to walk thru walls for him.

He didn't sugar coat it ( something you and I both can relate to) and then reason was he wanted to push people beyond their comfort zone - and that's usually not going to win you friends - at least not initially.

That's how GREAT products got built. That's how he built America's most successful company. No market research, no drive to make it cheaper - just make it better and cooler and never quit.

I read one article where it said Jobs had a premonition that his life would end sooner than later and that he pushed hard because of that.Maybe if we all recognize that the journey is short and no day is guaranteed that this would be a lot better world.

Michael

If you take an honest look at the history of the greats in any industry ... the likes of Ford, Edison, Westinghouse, Carnegie, Eastman, etc., etc. ... they were ALL extremely tough on those they worked closely with ... they set the bar high and never accepted "good enough" ... as ... good enough ... it had to be the best or nothing ... Which, in the end was probably why they were successful in the first place. Apple doesn't have cash on hand that rivals the Federal Reserve because Jobs was willing to accept the status quo ...

->> I'm not saying Steve Jobs was an @$$hole but my take on him and other corporate leaders is that people are willing to work for @$$holes if their brilliant and have a vision. Jobs was clearly brilliant and had a vision. He was undoubtably difficult to work for (just read the photographers' take on him on the PDN blog) but people stuck with him because of who he was and what they could learn from him.

It's sad that so many of our other industry leaders understand the @$$hole part but not the brilliant and vision part.

From everything I've read about Jobs, this rings very true. A closer look beyond the praise shows Jobs was ruthless in his climb to the top, fired people like crazy, was insanely competitive, and disliked by many who worked for him. But then again these traits are consistent with personalities who've become pioneers and innovators -- they all seem to have very sharp elbows and no tolerance for the shoddy.

Interesting but facile. Milo Yiannopoulos is a conservative columnist for the very conservative (with a small "c") Telegraph who takes great pride in being the BS revisionist of British tech writing.

IOW if Milo had been alive when Mohandas Gandhi died he'd have found some way to paint him as an arch-conservative that secretly supported India's remainong a part of the British Empire.
