Not sure if any of you have seen this yet, but its an amazing collection of images from the NATO Hospital in Kandahar. Fair warning, there is some graphic content.

As a combat cameraman for the Navy, we get access like this, but there is no way the images would ever see the light of day. I am glad a great storyteller was able to get this out.

Does that mean that the crutch holding, cellphone talking, RPG launching dude photo isn't in contention ?!?!

->> I had the pleasure of working with Ross when he was at The Hartford Courant. He came to the paper, which I've been a staff member since 1999, when we were going through a very tumultuous time. He brought with him a passion and work ethic that is still admired. Our paper had a reputation for being one of the worlds best papers for use of photography, winning the Angus McDougall award in 2001, 2002 and 2003 and Ross was excited to be joining our staff. He was a fantastic fit with us and it quickly became evident that he would go far beyond the walls of the Courant.

He left when our department was beginning to merge with our cross town TV station and major chances began to take hold as the Tribune Company fell into bankruptcy. Ross got out at the best possible time and has proven to be an amazing photojournalist, colleague and human. We at the Courant continue to watch his progression to being the best he can be.

The days of great journalism at many of our news organizations has changed dramatically, including ours, which just eliminated the position of Director of Photography this week! It's hard to imagine where we are headed next but I know I'm a better photographer and person for knowing him. Be well mine friend.
