New NFL On-Field Photo Vests:
David Richard, Photographer
Cleveland | OH | USA | Posted: 11:55 PM on 09.15.11
->> Are you serious? My XXL new tan vest given to me at the first Cleveland Browns' home game was not truly an XXL.
I'm a big guy and I saw average-sized guys trying to squeeze into these new designs. The older Red Vests had velcro to adjust the size.
I can guarantee this: I will not be able to wear one of these new vests when I put on several layers in Dec/Jan.
They are just way too small.

They don't breathe well either, but hey, at least there isn't a Canon ad on the back.

->> One person last week who is more than 300 pounds of mass simply had his vest slung over one arm.

The original red vests were sized and each stadium had a couple amply-sized ones so you had to get there early to ask for it. They finally adopted the adjustable sided ones. And they have always had pockets.

->> Rod, I'm not complaining. I never to bother to actually fasten the vest, preferring a more slovenly appearance, and I've always used the pockets for my light meter and a bottle of water.

However, Rod, remember, when you design in the future, most sports photographers are not as athletic as their subjects (you being the exception).

->> Rod.

I know.

If you and Rich had actually had a hand in the design it would be much better and have a flask-specific pocket. (I can always use a beer and my boss would probably differ on your opinion of my work ethic)

And I think we should all give the new, heavy vests the "Athens treatment" by cutting them off into more halter-top style to keep them from being so hot. Anyone who was at the Athens Olympics will know what I mean.

I'm hoping for XXL next game.. but then again a few less trips to Burger King wouldnt hurt either..

The Chris Farley reference was for this -

->> They really aren't that bad, guys. The bigger pockets are nice.

Not the most breathable thing out there, but hey, whatever.

Look at it this way -- little smaller (you don't have to button them up, ya know), maybe a little thicker, but we no longer serve to ruin each other's photos as out of focus, red blobs.

I'd take the former every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

(and G.J., you're one of the few I know who probably needs to have the vest taken in a bit)

->> The new khaki vests are nicer, in my opinion, than the red ones but they definitely do run small and only get smaller after they are washed. Two weeks ago I was given a brand new XL which fit fine then but yesterday when I put on an XL that had been washed I just laughed because there was no way it would fit anymore. Now for the bad news... for those of us who will probably never never find a vest that will fit correctly do not wear a "dry fit" or similar style shirt to a game as the velcro on the vest will completely ruin the shirt. After Sunday's game two different photographers were in the media room complaining about all the 'runs' in their shirts caused by the velcro from the vests which for all practical purposes completely ruined the shirts.
