CPS platinum gift no longer comes with a platinum renewal
Gregory Shamus, Photographer
Grosse Ile | MI | USA | Posted: 2:35 PM on 09.08.11
->> Just thought I would let everyone know if you are renewing your Canon CPS Platinum membership you will no longer receive the platinum welcome gift with a renewal. The gift is for new members only as of August 15th. I renewed on August 21st and was able to wrangle a gift out of them although it was not the $250 Thinktank Shapshifter bag I was expecting it was a $49 Thinktank laptop sleeve. Still not bad. I own a lot of Canon long glass and still feel it is worth it. It does pose the question. I have spent $1500 on platinum plans over the past years and will no longer receive the gift that comes to a new member that is spending their first $500. Is that fair? I may drop down to gold next time around. I have not posted this to start a “is it worth it for platinum or not thread.” Or a “switch to Nikon thread.” I just thought this was good information for photographers to have if the are up for platinum renewal.

Now i understand you might not have a need for 2 or 3 Shapeshifter bags and you're trying to offset the cost of the $500 dollars spent on the membership.

But i can totally see where Canon stands on this and where you or anyone else as an individual stands on this.
That being said Canon spends money on those bags as gift to you and everyone else. I'm sure their intentions is not to say here, go sell this and make money.

Just my two cents.

->> Louis I still think there is great value in the platinum service but have a hard time spending the same $500 as a new member and not getting nearly the same value when they get over $300 dollars worth of bag, caps and straps. You don't get any of that stuff only the card and clean and checks.

The best solution in my eyes is for Canon to offer the renewal at a discounted rate due to not sending out the new member package. I don't see that happening.

If I would of know none of the gifts came with renewal I would of considered the gold membership instead. I did not have all the information to make that call. Remember they send out a email when the changed the silver membership but I did not see one for the platinum changes.

for me it is not the gifts that make my decision........

->> Well a 7-8 pound package shipped over night from IL to NJ is about $120 with insurance (4K). That's $240 round trips x 6 clean and checks = $1,440.00 in SH alone. I've never paid for a clean and check so for grins let's just say $75.00 each or $450. We're closing in on $2,000 of value for $500.

So, if you have three camera bodies and three lenses that qualify isn't that still a pretty good deal? Doesn't it get better when you get 60% off parts when a repair is required? If you're not happy with the service, CPS will pay for a second service call at no cost and will again use overnight shipping.

It's a pretty good deal if you have the products that qualify for the program even without the free gift.

As for the gifts, I have tons of bags, caps, straps, etc... just sitting around unopened just waiting for my studio garage sale. =)

And - as a sidebar - for those on the Canon side of the street, Nikon Pro Service is free to join, albeit without the goodie bag.

I for one favor NPS just for the mere fact of rep access. I know I can contact one of three people from Nikon, and I will get support and service right away.

That kind of service is hard to beat. The swag is pointless if I can not get assistance when needed.

->> You guys would complain if you got hung with a new rope. If you think about it it whenever you send anything to Canon to be repaired they send you a prepaid fed ex tag to ship the item to Canon then give you 60% off said repair and then they ship it back to you in three days via fed ex and every time you borrow gear for evaluation they ship it to you free for your use for 14 to 18 days. Yes I upped my membership to Platinum in August and I got two more straps, a Canon lens book and a gift that consisted of a Think Tank Artificial Intelligence laptop case that I probably will never use but I am grateful for the rush service on all my repairs as well as the 6 clean&checks I get every year. If you add all this up it would come 3 to 4 thousand dollars, I for one truly appreciate what they provide for the level of membership that is available to me as a pro photographer.

I'm not sure what you're tlaking about. If I wanted to talk to my dedicated Canon rep directly I would get a phone call back from him within 24 hours. Sooner if it was urgent.

Technical issues are addressed via CPS immediately. Depending on your memebership, repairs are made within 3-7 business days. Loaner's avaiable if the repairs take longer.

Never has Canon aksed me what kind of photographer I am (Still, sports, landscape,....).

I've had the opportunity to talk to several Nikon shooters about their opinions of the NPS program. It seems that both Canon and Nikon have good support programs with minor differences when it comes down to support and service. The real differences are memebership levels, gifts, % discounts on service, free clean and checks etc.

Again, both programs support their memebers equally well.

Probably won't use the Artificial Intelligence because you can carry laptop in Shape Shifter. I still think it's a great deal for all you get.

As Kevin Krows said, I'm not sure what you're talking about. I could pick up the phone right now and call some of the midwest Canon guys. It helps that Matsumoto was an SIUC graduate because he makes visits down here, donates equipment, etc. But I still don't feel that my level of access is any better than any other CPS member. I have been nothing but pleased with my over the phone assistance and my repairs.

Again, the jacket is denitely not the same quality as my Acr'Teryx gear (not much is really...) but should do in a pinch. It'll probably live its life in the trunk of my car packed into a pouch for those days I don't have rain gear with me and I get surprised by Mother Nature. That is of course someone wants to trade it for their CPS UD or ShapeShifter! Not bad for what it really is, a bonus, because like everyone else I'm a CPS member for the discounted a quick repairs, shipping etc...

1- pin
various books.

Also on a side note, I took my 1DMIII in for clean and check because I'm selling it. I asked the guy how much to replace the scratched top and back LCDs covers. He said, don't worry about it and replaced them for nothing.

Not sure about the shipping as I always drop off and pick up.
