Mac OS: 10.7 Lion problems

->> http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/os-x-107-lion-is-more-painful-than-vista...

Obviously, not everyone is going to have this experience, but any OS that is evaluated as "similar" to Vista can't be good. I think I'll pass. At least for now.

Ouch.

Looks like I'm going to have to wait for 10.7.3 at least.

->> What's really funny is that he wrote that article the day that Apple released their .1 update... That said, I haven't heard of anyone having issues with it among the people I work with, and it's been running great for me. Only complaint was that it didn't include a Java runtime so the first time I tried to send stuff to ProDPI was a pain.

->> I've been using Lion since day one and haven't had one problem. I don't use any Microsoft products (that require the Rosetta framework) and that's where most of the issues are coming from.

All my photography programs/apps are fine. I've read about some photoshop issues but I use it daily and haven't had any problems with it.

What programs are you using that don't work PJ?

->> I've been using Lion since the first week and while the transition hasn't been painless, I've got it worked out.

I had two major problems

1) it killed the ability to send email out of my .mac MobileMe email. This was actually a huge PITA and I wrestled with it for days before downloading a trial version of Postbox (
http://www.postbox-inc.com/) and it worked the first time I fired it up (and the migration was extremely easy). I ended up buying Postbox and I really like it. It seems there's a conflict between MobileMe and Apple's Mail app. Other email clients work fine. Kind of embarrassing for Apple and still no totally reliable fix other than downloading a new email client.

2) I had freezes playing videos on my iMac. The 10.7.1 update fixed this problem.

Software wise, I had no compatibility problems that I wasn't expecting. (i.e. I knew Rosetta was dead and planned for it). I don't use Microsoft applications and Pages and Numbers work fine with the update. My Adobe programs work fine and my utilities (SuperDuper, SpellCatcher, Transmit etc) work fine in Lion.

The only thing that would have been a deal killer for me with Lion is that Sprint AirCard drivers don't work in Lion (they're 32 bit) so I can't use the company Sprint card in my laptop. But I use the tethering/hot spot feature on my iPhone so I don't use the AirCard. This is a Sprint problem - they've known about the issue since Lion was announced early this year and they're sitting on their hands.

->> I waited a few weeks... then after asking a friend ( and photographer using the same basic software... PM - LR - PS etc )how his migration went ( he was happy ) I took the plunge....

The only gotcha was my older EyeOne monitor calibration software wasn't compatible...beyond that... I have found LION to be more stable... ( than Snow Leopard ) my Adobe products seem to be faster.... all in all it was a very positive upgrade....

Your mileage may vary ... but it's all green-light from here

->> Yeah, the email thing popped up about a week after my transition. I'm running Lion on two Macs, a new iMac and an old 13" MBP. The problem never happened on the 13" MBP, just the iMac.

There's something in the Mail, Contacts and Calendars System prefs that conflicts with the Mail app and it creates two SMTP settings for MobileMe in Mail that causes all sorts of confusion when you send mail. I thought I had it fixed and then it came back. I tried Postbox on a whim and it worked, so I've stayed with Postbox. Obviously not everyone has this problem (my 13" MBP for example) but for those us who had it, it's been really frustrating.

There's a discussion in the Apple Support Communities here:

https://discussions.apple.com/message/15744799#15744799

The annoying thing is that Apple has yet to respond in any official way.

->> I tested Lion installed on an external drive for two weeks before making the transition ... no problems whatsoever ... but then I did a clean install ... as I usually do when going to the next generation ... it eliminates all the baggage issues of the transition when traversing one or more generations of OS ... any comparison of Lion to Vista ... I just don't think are really relevant ... to think that this is the case is way off the mark ...

Like anything with computers, YMMV. I'm running Lion on two Macs and Lightroom is rock solid on both of them. In fact, now that I've ironed out the kinks, both machines are rock solid.

Concerning LR and Lion, I definitely concur with jack ... in fact I think LR is a little bit more responsive on the same machines vs. Snow Leopard ...

The time I had checked which was prior to 8-19 Epson didn't have an upgrade. I am glad to see it was updated.

->> I haven't had the email issues but Lion has been a painful upgrade for sure. More so on my iMac than my MacBook Air. Time machine was painfully slow until the 10.7.1 patch arrived. But now I am having all kinds of stability issues with Safari. Sometimes loading web pages flashes the page and then I just get a blank white screen. The only way to fix it is to quit and restart Safari. Gestures on my Magic TrackPad are hit and miss. iTunes will download App updates and they still show up as available.

While these are nothing that will stop me from working they are annoying as hell.. There is nothing that can't be fixed with updates but it is certainly not what I would expect from Apple.

Websites would take forever to open; my ICal wouldn't load at all, etc. Whatever they did the last time seems to have resolved those issues. However, I did have them send me a copy of Snow Leopard to reinstall--just in case. It was slowing down my work to the extent I could not function.
