Dave LaBelle photo workshop in July 2011 in Kansas

->> Dave LaBelle presents the fourth edition of his Pictures With Purpose workshop in Chanute. Kansas.

David LaBelle is going home (of sorts).

It is hard to believe that 30 years have passed since I worked for the Chanute Tribune in southeast Kansas. Some of my fondest memories in journalism and some of my favorite images were produced during my three and a half years there. I have never been to land where the faces and the people are more interesting than in Kansas. Kansas is the home of my mother and truly a special place to me. And those who know me, know I have always been a small town photographer. I believe that the small towns, while struggling in many parts of our country – especially those far removed from busy interstates – are visual treasure chests. My talented photographer friend Frank Niemier once said, "If you can't shoot pictures in Kansas, you can't shoot pictures." I think he was right.

WORKSHOP DETAILS

- Begins with an informal get together on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in Chanute, Kansas, July 19.

- Workshop ends Sunday evening at 5 p.m., July 24.

- Tuition is $750.00 with a $200.00 deposit if accepted.

- We will take only 10 students, chosen this year by application. Applications are open from now until April 1st. We will notify those chosen by April 10th.

- Workshop participants will be responsible for housing, travel and meals. There may be some options to rent a room from local folks.

WHO SHOULD APPLY - Anybody who wants to learn more about photographing people in documentary style. The workshop is designed for college-age students, but not limited to "young" folks.

WHAT TO EXPECT - Unlike last year's workshop which dealt with more serious storytelling, this year we will focus more on celebrating life in small town America. That said, serious, intimate stories may surface to accompany those lighter feature pictures. Spend time with Dave and other faculty shooting, sharing - learning. Nightly sharing and gentle critiques.

WHAT THIS IS NOT - This is NOT a technical workshop about software programs or multi-media. This will be about the joy and power of making still photographs. Students may collect some sound, but it will not be required. Faculty will shoot some video and collect sound for multi-media shows.

HOW TO APPLY - Send a one or two page letter stating why you want to attend this workshop, what you hope to learn and how you think it might help you. What you write (not how you write) is important.

Send 10 of your favorite pictures in digital form as jpegs. Be sure the file sizes are no larger than 200 DPI. Please do not send Raw files. You can email these to me at: labelledave@gmail.com
