iPad photo import problems.
Michael Maano, Photographer
Jacksonville | FL | USA | Posted: 4:55 PM on 12.01.10
->> Wondering if anyone else is having this problem. After updating my iPad with the latest software I can no longer import photos using the camera connector kit. One of the reasons I purchased the 3G iPad is so that I can import photos, edit them and transmit from the field. Now when I try to import photos from my card I get this message: "Cannot Use Device - The connected USB device requires too much power" I've tried several cards and it won't let me import photos. I'm going to the apple store tomorrow for help. I need this to work before this weekend's football games.

->> Yeah, I've tried a 1, 4 and 8 gig cards and none of them will import into the ipad. Hopefully the apple geniuses will be able to fix this problem. I'll let you know what they say after my appointment with them tomorrow.

->> After recently performing the upgrade I no longer am able to select projects or albums from Aperture (the button is greyed out) to load into the iPad. As a workaround, I had to import them into iPhoto first and then the iPad. Kind of a pain. Any other work around? This worked fine in the previous version of the OS.

->> Michael:

Are you using the Apple branded connection kit?

If so, have you tried turning your iPad completely off (by holding the power button and sliding the red slider) since the 4.2.1 update?

The USB power output was decreased in the iOS 4.2.1 update and several third party connector kits no longer work. Several people have reported the same problem when using the Apple-branded kit, but many were able to resolve it by doing a full power cycle on the iPad.

I bet Apple will roll out something in a future update if it's not resolved with a power-cycle. It's embarrassing to disable your own peripherals.

->> Hey Chris,
I did power off and I am using the Apple camera connection kit. I've heard from other photogs that are having the same problem as well as with the microphones that used to work with the old OS. I'm headed to the Apple store so I'll see if there is a work around. Brad, that's the first that I've heard about the aperture problem. I've only heard about the files being being arranged by date as opposed to by name after the update.

->> I'm using a third party connector (cheap on Ebay one plug for usb and sd card) then I plug a cf card reader into that, it works great with the new iOS ... maybe you should just try a different card reader ?

->> I was told by the Apple people that it is a recognized problem and that there isn't a way to revert back to the old iOS but it will probably be addressed in a future update. I told them that the main reason I purchased the iPad 3G with the unlimited plan was so I could import photos, edit them and transmit them from the field. I emphasized that I need this for my work! After a little deliberating they told me that they had a few older models new in a box in the back with the old iOS and they took mine in and swapped them out. I tested it before I left the store (nikon d700, 8gb sandisk extreme, sandisk card reader, apple ipad camera connector kit). I uploaded 30 photos and transmitted 5 and it worked fine. I guess I won't be updating until I'm sure the problem is fixed. Thanks for taking care of me Apple.

->> Juerg, I read on the apple forum that the new iOS dropped the power outage from the connector from 100ma to 20ma. This disabled the use of a lot of peripherals like the microphones that are sold at the apple store. Not sure how a third party connector would get around the power issue. I won't be updating until I'm sure it works for other people.

->> Juerg,

You can shoot SD cards in the 1D, 5D, etc, by using an SD-CF adapter. I use them in my cameras as I shoot almost only with SDs now with the 5D/MKII kit and traveling with an iPad.

->> I did a jailbreak on firmware 4.2.1 (the latest software). I use the eye-fi in 1D series by writing the RAW files to the CF card and the smallest JPEG to the SD card in the second slot. Have also used a CF to SD adapter and that works as well, just not sure how it effects the range of transmission as I haven't tested it yet.

also, it says repeatedly that this is a beta release and might not be stable...or has bugs..not a big deal, but users should keep that in mind.

Why do they try to fix stuff that is not broken.
