What credit card merchant service do you use?

->> So, I'm taking the step from part time photog with a SmugMug Pro website to starting an actual photography business. I registered a business name yesterday and got my tax ID. Tomorrow I am meeting with a graphic designer to have her start working on a logo and business card designs. Next will be a custom website, still don't know whether to go with flash based or HTML.

Anyway, I'm about to join the PPA and I saw one of the benefits is their partnership with Midwest Transaction Group. The rates seem very good and on their site, they offer the use of smartphones as terminals for on $89. That sounds really good to me.

So, who all uses MTG and what are your thoughts of them? Do you use the smartphone terminal? Anybody using a different transaction company that offers good rate that you are happy with?

->> Allen- I'm so glad that we have a list policeman such as yourself. I'd hate to put up a thread that has been previously discussed. With an old thread, I'd have to wade through it and discover the information is no longer relevant and then bring the old thread back up for everyone else to wade through before a new, more pertinent answer. Thanks for taking the time and the responsibility to make sure that the information is not duplicated.

->> No sweat fellas. Everyday when I come into work I hit certain sites and this message board and classified ads is one of them. So, I'm always up to date on what's been posted. However, I was in Vegas for 5 days early this month and got back the day after this thread was posted. Apparently I didn't bother going back and looking at everything that was posted while I was away. Either way, I appreciate all of the responses so far.

->> So, someone on a photography forum that I frequent is also shopping for a cc merchant company and he contacted MTG to get the particulars and this is what he found out.

There is a $15/ month fee for having MTG + ROAMPay for the iPad/ iPhone but only during months where you have no transactions, + $59 fee for the ROAMPay card wipe device (plugs into the iDevice audio port).

Here are the breakdowns:
MasterCard/ Visa/ Discover
Qualified Swipe - 1.55%
Mid - Qualified - 2.25%
Non -Qualified - 2.95%
Monthly Fee - $5
Per Transaction - $0.20

AMEX is higher

ROAMPay Setup - $59
ROAMPay Monthly - $10
ROAMPay Transaction Fee - $0.05

I'm not in love with these mid and non qualified rates. What are your thoughts on these? Are they ridicoulas or no? Are you using a company with better mid and non qualified rates?

->> If you plan on using Inuit for the love of god steer clear of this piss poor company.

Their billing department is so dysfunctional it isn't even funny.

I closed the account around a year ago I believe. Sent in the letter, they received it. Thought the account was closed

Well a few months later they charged my account again.

I call up, they show me as having my account still open.

Explained to them the situation, they never show it being received even after I called and had it closed.

To say this company is incompetent would be a very big understatement.

Stay FAR away from them, period!

->> By the way, I will add it is partly my fault for not noticing the transaction on my business account. They stole money from me for the past year it looks like. Around 180 dollars or so.

So again just a word of warning, document everything when you go to close that account. Because they will claim ignorance.

But again I will take blame for it as well, stupid me for not making sure I document it better.

->> I compared a few merchant accounts at local banks when I set up mine several years ago and the offers vary widely. I don't do a whole lot of transactions, but have some months that I can run 50-60 small transactions. I didn't really need a Zon or other hardwear and my bank found me a software solution so that I could use a PC to process my CC transactions, that has now evolved to a web based product, so if I can get online, I can settle credit cards on the spot. The web site that my processor goes though is called authorize.net. The PC/On-line option was not being pushed by my bank because they didn't get to sell me any equipment--I had to ask and ask again if they could find me such a solution.

I love my Square. I was dubious in my post from a year ago, but after giving one merchant all of my vitals and then asking "do you have something like Square?" I never heard a peep from them.

You can download the app onto your smart phone and run it without the "doohickey" by just inputting the credit card number.

If I did not have a contract, I would probably switch to Midwest. They also pay the PCI fee (which could be an extra $150 per year (unless it has changed)).
Don't forget about the PCI fee which is mandatory now if you accept credit cards.

->> The PCI compliance fee is an absolute scam, and this was one of the many things that drove me away from East Commerce Solutions. As fees steadily rose, I was ultimately paying roughly $50 per month in addition to the $179 annual PCI compliance fee which they took directly out of the account without announcing that this was going to happen. $179, coincidentally, is the maximum amount that can be charged for PCI compliance if I am not mistaken.

Thus, my Merchant Account fees had risen to $779 per year and that was the end of that. Now, I have ZERO monthly fees, ZERO PCI compliance fees, and the money from my transactions is in my checking account within two days.

Matthew mentioned avoiding Intuit, but from the difficulty he is describing it sounds like a more traditional merchant account like what I had with East Commerce Solutions as opposed to the Gopayment system (owned by Intuit) that I am using now as Gopayment does not have monthly fees.

Taking what Matthew said about canceling his account, I had the same problem when I pulled the plug on East Commerce Solutions. They did NOT want to stop taking their $50 per month out of my account and it took several phone calls to get that fixed!

Without a doubt their billing system just kept on billing me. Again it was my fault for not noticing the charge, but how many times do I have to call in and send in by mail a cancellation notice.

I have a square account and have had no issues with it. Very simple to use when I need it.
