One more reason why NPS Rocks
Yamil Sued, Photographer, Photo Editor

->> I know Matt Kartozian posted why he loved NPS and Nikon Service. But I had to start a new thread.

A few weeks ago I sent out to NIkon Velville, NY one of my D3's and my new Nikon 70-200 f2.8 AF-S VRII lens for a Clean & Check and a minor issue with Lens to Camera Communication.

Of course NPS loaned me the same gear to cover me while the repair took place.

Well, Nikon Melville did all the necessary Clean, Checks and Tests and sent the gear to me via UPS Next Day... Now that is where the problem started!!

UPS lost the box in Farmingdale, NY, it was left there!!

I got the box two days later and the box looked like it was dropped several times on every corner!!

The gear was superbly packaged.

The body was wrapped in Bubble material and the lens was inside it's Nylon case with tons of Foam Peanuts and Bubble pack!!

When I unwrapped the body it immediately said ERR on it, it wouldn't work. When I finally managed to make the body work, I noticed that even though the lens was in the Nylon Case and the body was superbly wrapped in Bubble Material, the lens managed to hit the body hard enough to BEND THE HOT SHOE!!

This is incredible!! This is the worst thing I have ever seen UPS do to a box!!

I called and E-Mailed Nikon Service and within one hour, I had NPS Extending my loan and Nikon Service Relations dealing with UPS to get the packaging and my gear back to Nikon in order to figure out if it can be repaired or replaced (I rather have this happen) because this lens was brand new.

Both Nikon NPS, Nikon Service and Nikon Service Relations deserve the reputation they have!! They are great!!

I don't have 100% resolution of my problem yet, it might take a week or two, but at least I know that I have a very professional group of people both in Melville and El Segundo taking care of my and my equipment!!

Nikon USA and NPS Rocks!!

They picked up the box with the damaged gear yesterday, it's sitting as some inspector's desk here on Phoenix. I wonder how much they know about High End DSLR's, Optics, and the tight tolerances in these products and the result of the Vicious Impact that this gear sustained during the less than stellar shipping!! They will most likely refuse the claim and Nikon will be left holding the bag for the total incompetence of UPS!!

I hope this gear gets back to Melville sometime next week.

7/13/10 NPS (Debbie really) sends out loaner, and Nikon pays the freight to ship both my dead D3 AND the loaner.
7/14/10 I get the loaner and Nikon gets my dead D3.
7/16/10 UPS is on my doorstep with a repaired D3.....

Unlike Yamil's experience UPS delivers the package unharmed.

I'd say "rocks" is an understatement.

->> Well, I just got the interesting news from Nikon that UPS need Fifteen Working Days to complete the Claims Process.

It didn't take them that long to completely destroy $7,700.00 worth of Nikon Gear, but they DO want all their time to Decline this claim!!

They will blame both Nikon for not properly packaging this package in order to withstand UPS to drive one of their trucks over it or drop it from 15 feet or more and me, because this gear is not sufficiently damaged. Yeah sure, the lens hit the body so hard that IT FREAKING BENT THE SHOT SHOE and when I first put the battery on it, it HAD AN ERR MESSAGE and it took me over 3o minutes of tweaking for this to clear, so clearly this body sustained severe Impact Damage. If I had caused this damage to the gear myself, I would immediately purchase new gear, I don't want to repair this lens after such abuse!! I can't afford to buy a new lens now, but I don't want this lens back, not after this abuse!! UPS is showing what a kind of company they are.

The latest communication with the repair shop is this. When the first back ordered parts for our 500mm came in, someone went back into the lens to resume repair. They then discovered another part which needed to be replaced - that is "Scheduled to be received from Japan on 8/3/10" If our lens is indeed repaired that week, it will be nine weeks door-to-door.... DON"T assume that a few good repair scenarios mean all repairs end well. And of course, don't assume that the majority of repairs happen in anything but a timely fashion..

I guess you got your vent in as well. To clarify, I know who does what at Nikon - Anne Cahill is the better at running interference than any pro market rep I've ever dealt with. Additionally, as it's fairly dead time for us, we don't need another loaner. We had a long lens when we needed it for the end of HS track and baseball seasons, and won't really need long glass again till football ramps up in about 6 weeks, so we'll save the FedEx charge for later. What does bother me is the time it is taking for the diagnose-order-receive-diagnose-order-receive-repair sequence to happen.

->> Several years ago I sold a 400mm f2.8 to a SS.com member. We have a UPS distribution center here so I packed it up and took it there. Sent it to the buyer. He gets it and I get a email a few days later from him saying the lens doesn't focus to infinity and has issues.

I had insured it ( no way it doesn't go insured). We get it looked at and start a claim with UPS. The woman can't wait to deny the claim, stating it must have been improperly packed.

"Really?" I asked. "that's interesting since UPS here inspected the packing, and in fact, taped the box up before accepting it".

The lens was not only packed inside lots of packing material, it was inside was of the steel cases that used to come with the lenses.

Fortunately the buyer had worked at UPS at one time and knew how they sometimes treat the shipments. Needless to say, UPS approved the claim for the repair after some gentle squeezing by yours truly :) :) :) .

Hopefully Nikon sticks to it's guns.

Do any Nikon users know how to find out the D3 shutter actuations without sending the body to NPS?
