Canon Mark III and the color Red
Nick Morris, Photographer

->> Does anyone know what would cause the color Red to flare on my Canon Mark III I have it set for Neutral and yet the color Red for some reason goes hay wire. Any ideas?

->> My mkIII has always oversaturated red in certain lighting. I ended up dropping the saturation down a notch and that seemed to keep it under control. I wouldn't have described it as haywire though. So you might be getting a more dramatic affect than I was.

->> You're not alone... I shoot a lot of stage performances and when the color red comes into play... OUCH! Though, I've found that if there are other colors of light mixed in, the red doesn't go "haywire" as much. I've even talked with videographers and they don't like red all that much either. I shoot with a D3/D300. I have also dropped my saturation a bit and it does help. I don't know what causes this but I bet someone does. Wavelength of the color? CMOS sensor?

->> I use the individual color sliders in Lightroom to correct red issues as well as other colors that seem a bit off. If one image is off then all of them are so I sync that adjustment accross the board and go from there. I use this adjustment on both RAW and JPEG files. It's one of the features in Lightroom I really like.

->> I have owned a 20D, 30D, 40D, 5D, 1DIII, and 5D2 and they ALL have problems with the red channel. Its just something you have to deal with. Before using lightroom, I simply would use the neutral picture style and click back the saturation by -1. Now, with lightroom, you can just develop a preset to apply to all the pictures upon import which could include sliding back the red channel by whatever suits you.

->> Blown out reds have always been an issue with all my Canon bodies including the MK III. Doesn't seem to affect my newer Nikon D3 to the same degree though.
