->> Interesting approach.

I guess time will tell if this business model works.

->> Notice they'll still publish a paper, just not daily. It's likely because you can get a lot more money for an ad on paper than one on pixels.

This route is similar to the one I've been thinking many papers will follow: Slowly cutting back on the frequency of print editions, hoping the business can sustain until online ads alone can cover the cost of operation. (A much smaller operation.)

->> Except it won't be The Ann Arbor News publishing the (twice a week) paper. The Ann Arbor News, which has been published since 1835, will be closed and dissolved.

AnnArbor.com LLC will be a new web-based media company. That is the company which will print a paper version twice a week.

->> LOL

As somebody who ran a news related sports web site that was getting 3.5 million page views a year, the revenue generated wasn't even enough to pay one staff member for the 3 peak months of the high school football season. How a city of 114,000 thinks it will generate enough traffic to keep the lights on is beyond me.

I still can't believe how many print publications just think if they go to the web it will solve all their problems. You think you can't get enough for your print ads now, wait till their ad reps call up and tell them about the brave new world of internet ads that cost about the same as the print ones.

I also can't wait till somebody figures out that people, even young people, are willing to pay a premium for a print product and all across this country, savvy investors bring back the news paper, version 2.0.

What is print 2.0 going to be like? Well if I knew that I'd be rich as hell.

But if you want to see the first place somebody gives it a shot, look towards San Francisco. With all the tech mavericks and venture capitalists around there, I'd give it 30 days before somebody reopens the doors if the Chronicle shuts down. My guess is somebody's got a business plan, white paper, or whatever all lined up and ready to fall on the desks of investors looking for the next big thing.
