I want a Canon version of the D700
Christopher Rossi, Photographer

->> Dear Canon,

Please make a Canon version of the Nikon D700. I do not need the high mega-pixel count or the HD video of the 5D MK II. What I do need is a high frame rate and pro level auto focus for about $2500. I wish I had the funds to switch over to Nikon but you know, the economy and all.

Sincerely,

Chris

->> Dear Chris:

Lately we have had our hands full with a few other things.

We have finally completed the beta testing of the Mark III. You may have seen the firmware update that we came out with a few weeks ago. Sweet! Do you think Nikon devotes two years to publicly beta testing their flagship camera? Guess again, Chris.

The "banding and black dots thing" on the 5D seems to be under control now, more or less, which is good. You wouldn't believe how finicky some people can be about image quality. Most of those black dots came right out with a little Photoshopping, but there are always a few people who want a black-dot-free image straight from the camera.

We've been busy revamping our CPS program. That's been a big hit with most photographers, let me tell you, and it's kept us hopping.

Anyways, it's been hectic. We will now turn our attention to a high frame rate, pro level AF, full frame camera for $2500. Why? Because you asked for it and at Canon, there is nothing so important as our customers.

Best regards,

Canon

Sure Nikon was first with HD video, but the 720 video instead of the 1080, and the fact that it is on a cropped camera make the D90 disappointing.

If we are wishing, from Canon, I want a 21 mp, 10.5 or higher burst rate in RAW w/ 15 image buffer, RAW v.2, 25-6400 ISO, Compact flash UDMA 90 mb/sec, 32 bit depth resolution CMOS sensor with 0.0 on chip noise, Dual Digic IV processors, 4" OLED live view monitor, EOS Cleaning system v.2, 40 focus points for auto focus tracking, Highlight Tone Priority v2, longer battery life, wi-fi, Radio Frequency and blue tooth enabled,... and a cup holder.

->> I don't give any consideration to the Red camera. From what I've heard the Red cameras are a source of frustration as they will quit working without explanation. If Red intends to join the throngs of digital camera manufacturers, they are going to have to figure out those quirks or no one will bother with it. I see Red as being the new Arriflex, not the new Nikon/Canon competitor.

Lengthy tangent ahead:

The clock is ticking on still photography. The majority of us are going to be either shooting video or we're not going to be shooting at all. Go ahead; deny, deny, deny.

There's some technology challenges to be worked out in terms of the lens' AF and iris control, but I suspect that's going to be trivial.

I also suspect we all could be left holding the bag when the camera design is fully revealed. I think we all have to realize that it may require new lenses. Virtually every AF lens we own may be rendered obsolete once a "video-first" camera is launched.

This change could easily kill Nikon. If Nikon doesn't come out with a video platform, they're done. They have to know that. Nikon made the D1, which ushered in the current era. Surely the Nikon "V1" is somewhere in R&D. Canon already makes video cameras so I don't see this being a threat to them at all. Even Sony could emerge as superior to Nikon if they leverage their video roots.

Note: Don't even mention the argument about television rights and video at pro sports. I said most of us will shoot video because most of us don't shoot pro sports. If you aren't shooting pro sports, you'll be shooting video. You may elect to shoot stills, but cameras are going to start being designed to shoot video first and foremost.

->> I agree with the statement that the RED has a long way to go.

However, because of the RAW 2, and the greater information that it produces compared to HD, it is just a matter of time before all those bugs are put to rest.

I worked on LEVERAGE last season. We shot with the RED. The only thing that the RED couldn't do was light the set. The DP was a film DP and was lighting the set like film, and in my opinion, lost a lot of detail. It's dark as hell.

The software was the real issue, not the hardware.

The camera works better with cheap ass lens set as well because it is way too crisp.

Introduction into the DSLR arena will take still photography to a whole other level.

Like it or not, it is the future.

->> Hey Darren,

Gotta disagree with you on a few key things.

First, Nikon isn't going to disappear if they don't get into video. Photography is just a portion of their business, and I don't think it's a big portion either.

Second, I don't think still photography is going anywhere soon either. Still photos take less to edit and distribute than video. Less memory, less CPU, less time and less bandwidth. You can't underestimate the importance of practicality.

(And in terms of the single image vs. the moving image, I think the argument could be made that still photos get more views than even short videos.)

->> David, you are right about your comment regarding still photos vs video. I've read and talked to several people at large newspapers, and they all say that their still photo galleries get a whole lot more traffic than whatever video they are trying to do. NYTimes' Still photo galleries account for 20 percent of the traffic on their entire site.

->> Our little paper does far better with still photos than with video.

Five years ago, I think we all got excited about creating these rich, immersive stories for the internet. Because we could, really, not because people necessarily wanted them.

What I think people do want is easy access to journalism that they can consume in a quick, surface way. Serve it up quickly and often. Think of the potential for killer stills as entry points into a story on the mobile device version of your paper. Sweet frame on the iPhone screen, stick your greasy index finger here for the story.

Good stills can convey just as much of a story as video, more beautifully in my opinion, and with a far shorter investment of time.

Stills are going to be more important than ever.

But I still want the Nikon version of the 5D Mark II :)

But I agree with Mr. Rossi, Canon should do something like a D700 (maybe 16-18mp)... I'm sure Canon will.

The Red thing? I think they decided to do a DSLR because Nikon and Canon are barging into their territory. This battle will be fun to watch.

I would pull excerpts here but I was moved by the entire post. It sums up quite a bit and makes me breath a little sigh of relief for the still image.

If rumors turn out to be true, the new Rebel will have HD video. My fear is that the 50D's eventual replacement with video capability is as close as we're going to get to fill in the gap between the Rebel line and the new 5D. Maybe they will increase the sensor size (i.e. reduce the crop factor to 1.3x) on that model, but I'm not holding my breath for full frame.
