How inappropriate?

->> Yup. Given that there's nothing else going on in the world that matters, apparently, I would like to field a discussion of the use of the "inappropriate" button on our dear SportsShooter.com
I'm beginning to think that it might be neat if the peeps so quick to use the inappropriate button were identified. I mean, hey, we all like to get credit for and own our own work, right? What is the flaw in this idea?
There doesn't seem to be much understanding of its application either. For instance, I just received an "inappropriate" for mentioning the possible sale or closure of the print edition of the NYT. Yes, really.
This isn't about whether I've got thick skin or not, it's more about anonymous sniping and erstwhile morality. As I've said before, I really like to earn my "inappropriateness", and not just have it handed to me.
And, for the record, here are the stats on the marks I've handed out. You'll note that in my entire history here, I've never marked anyone inappropriate. Although, I have wished for a "dumbass" or "idot" option from time to time...
From me:
Informative 62.3596% 111 (to 74 members)
Funny 11.2360% 20 (to 19 members)
Huh? 21.3483% 38 (to 31 members)
Off Topic 4.4944% 8 (to 8 members)
Inappropriate 0% 0 (to 0 members)
To me:
Informative 15.2893% 37 (from 30 members)
Funny 40.4959% 98 (from 87 members)
Huh? 16.5289% 40 (from 36 members)
Off Topic 6.6116% 16 (from 14 members)
Inappropriate 21.0744% 51 (from 46 members) |

->> Jamie, I confess. I just marked your thread inappropriate. I couldn't resist.
But seriously, my question is why do you care?
It's an internet message board. It's like being upset about some guy ranting on sports talk radio.
Let it go and worry about more important things in life, like Mark Rebilas' latest adventure. |

->> Cheers: You're right, Scott, I ought not care, but it's less a question about me receiving the marks than a question about the mark itself. And here's this little tidbit:
"Misuse of this rating can result in a suspension of your ability to participate in the message board. Please think twice before you use this rating."
Why do I think that no one, ever, has been suspended for the overuse of that overused mark?
Jeers: I didn't earn yer inap mark, Scott! You're too generous, ya gotta make me work for that stuff, man! |

->> Inappropriate: "Should be used only when something truly offensive has been said."
You said you received an inappropriate for posting about the possible closure of the printed New York Times. What's so surprising about that? Don't you find the possible closing of such an established newspaper to be offensive?
*grin* |

It's called "idot". |
