->> Fortune magazine is reporting that:
"According to industry insiders, Hearst, which publishes magazines ranging from Cosmopolitan to Esquire and newspapers including the financially imperiled San Francisco Chronicle, has developed a wireless e-reader with a large-format screen suited to the reading and advertising requirements of newspapers and magazines. The device and underlying technology, which other publishers will be allowed to adapt, is likely to debut this year."

->> Amazon has a similar device already. Kindle, which uses what they call e-ink is said to run for a couple weeks on 1 charge. The Kindle's screen doesn't produce eye strain you get on normal LCD screens, making it easier to read books or long articles for long periods. I don't have one yet nor do I work for them but it does look interesting to say the least. And you can already get the San Francisco Chronicle on it along with Mr. Hanashiro's USA Today, and others.
I've had 2 of my Magazine subscriptions that went online only.I canceled and haven't even looked at their websites and I'm an Internet junkie. Not everyone wants to do that type of reading sitting at a desk. I like to be able to sit on the couch and read. Maybe these devices will save your industry.

->> Why? Nobody reads anymore.
Or perhaps by shutting down newspapers Hearst will force us all to embrace their warm and cuddly e-reader.
How does one start a fire in the fireplace with an e-reader?
Give me paper or give me death. HA! |

| ->> Hearst is such an electronics giant, it's about time they got around to doing this. I'm confident they will succeed where all of the other tiny electronics firms like Sony have failed in the past. |

->> This would have been more helpful about 5 years ago when things started to really downhill for newspapers. But I can't see this device working for several reasons:
1. Is it only going to be for the newspaper only, or can you surf the Internet with it? It would be lame to only get one newspaper on this device, while you could just get on a computer/laptop/netbooks and get all the news you want from any source.
2. Where is the wireless downloads coming from? There is no national broadband wireless system in place, so you will have to bum some free wifi from someone to get your paper and get updates. I guess they could install wireless Internet around the metro area or integrate with phone carriers' 3G networks, but it seems like a lot of work and it would cost lots of money to set up this infrastructure.
3. How are people going to get this? If you have to charge people a subscription fee (to receive the device and their news), they'll probably skip it and just use their computers. Basically, if people don't pick up papers for 25 cents, what will make them pick this up?
I think the market has changed so much that there really is no need for this device anymore. It would have to be more than just a newspaper reader because that's what people expect. The Kindle is a specific market where the information within the books don't change.
