My vote is Pebble Beach golf events and the Monterey Bay Blues Festival. |

WSBK,95,96,97,98,99,00,01,02,03,04
Season Hardcard Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca 1991- present.
Season Hardcard Infineon Raceway 1991 to present
These are both all access passes and the card from Infineon covers NHRA every year. The Secret Service pass is pretty cool. |

->> Chicago Auto Show - it is the best because of the restirctions and stipulations they print on them.
This years:
- A government-issued phto ID must be presented for admission.
- This credential may be revoked by show officials at any time for any reason - even if we don't like your tie.
- Duplication of credentials is illegal and will be prosecuted.
- Holder of this credential agrees to hold show management blameless and harmless in the event of personal injury or loss or damage to property.
- Please remember that I didn't know until this day that it was Barzini all along.
They always have at least one piece of "wisdom" in that section. One year it said: Behave. Have a Big Chief Notebook and a #2 pencil. Use the buddy system and don't ask, don't tell.
They just like to have a good time. Beats all that serious garbage usually printed in that space.
This years was also barcoded... my first one of those. I've got to get a scanner to read it. I want to know what kind of information they were gathering.
2nd place goes to the John Deere Classic. They actually took the time to take and put my mugshot on it. |

->> Ohio State used to have small laminated passes hung from lanyards. Then they went to passes about the size of a posterboard. When one of us suggested they should just hand out press sweaters, they went to red plastic vests the bleed all over your clothes. That will teach us to be sarcastic, I guess.
My favorite pass is the 2002 Fiesta Bowl, the national championship game OSU won in OT. And not just for the sentimental value -- they handed out more swag with those passes than I've ever seen, and they had Coronas in the press room. Now THAT's good media relations! |

->> My Wizards NBA season credential a few years ago that said "Jeff Bridges."
I replaced my picture with one of the actor best known as The Dude and no team or security personnel noticed all season. Just occasionally another photographer would glance at my pass and say "what the heck is that?" and start laughing.
Or it could be the Super Bowl pass where the NFL lost our submitted photos and they took mine with one of those crappy cameras attached to a computer. The final product looked like a photo they take at the morgue so police can ask around a neighborhood if anyone knows the victim.
I do save all my credentials and one day will either put them up on a bulletin board when I have a nice home office or I'll just get tired of it and throw them away. |

I still have what the Secret Service call a "DNK" pin, worn on the lapel of your jacket when you're given backstage access to photograph a President at an event.
DNK stands for "Do Not Kill". |

| ->> A few years ago I was going to shoot a University of Colorado football game, but the folks at media will call couldn't find my pass. Former CU quarterback Charles Johnson, who does radio work for the CU games, happened to be standing there and offered to make some calls. The SID told him the pass should be there, but if it still couldn't be found that there was a pass for Carmelo Anthony that I could have, because he wasn't going to be coming. They asked me if I wanted Carmelo's pass or the one for "C. Anthony - Friend." I figured no one would believe I was Carmelo Anthony, but I could pass for Carmelo's friend. |

->> Some of the past Bonnaroo arm bands have been fairly cool, not plastic, but actual fabric and comfortable.
But the best was from Hookahville, just a small music festival (though they still pull in some big names) put on by the Columbus, Oh. band Ekoostik Hookah. The press pass had awesome illustration of Hunter S. Thompson on it.
Jeff, I know what your talking about with those OSU red vests, couldn't stand those things. They have gone back to lanyards now. |

->> My Masters Tournament passes, because they are so hard to come by. And they were one of the first passes that you had to get scanned as you came in the front gates. Talk about feeling special.
And my first credential to the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France. The very first big event I ever shot.
I have one of those Secret Service passes but that DNK pin Jim's talking about sounds cool and creepy at the same time. |

->> The Kentucky Derby credentials are kinda blah on their own, but they use stickers to grant access to different areas. If you get one that is loaded up with stickers it looks kinda neat.
I had Ozzy sign my Ozzfest laminate after the tour was over, so although not cool from a design perspective it has major sentimental value. |

->> My favourite was the old Westchester County (NY) card
It was horrible laser printed photo on a white piece of plastic. All is says is Westchester County Press Pass, with your name. The upside, it would have been hard to forge. The downside, no one believed it was real, including most cops in Westchester County.
Aside from that the 'media ID' I received at the US Navy/USCG base in Bahrain was the coolest. It was a business card from the USCG CO. On the back of the business card, written in Bic pen (those clear ones that crack really easily) was "MEDIA Steven Frischling OK" and his signature. I used that with a Passport as my photo ID to get on and off the base for my brief time on the base. Very secure system they had in place. |

http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/6838/apcuj2.jpg
The last round of Blue Man Group passes were pretty good, too - Blue Men dressed up as members of AC/DC, Elvis, etc.
And let's not forget my pass from last year's Bills training camp. Tightest non-Presidential event security I've ever had, and yet they issued me a pass with the wrong last name and never questioned that it didn't match my ID. |

->> I have had my share of good one's of my own, but my most prized is from my dad who was a Navy combat photographer during WWII. It is his "Photographer's Identification Card" It bares his photo and vital stats along with the simple instructions that:
"he is an official photographer of the U S Navy. He is assigned to making offical photographs of any naval subjects. All commanding officers of ships and stations are requested to cooperate with and assist the bearer in obtaining photographs"
It has an expiration date of 3/1/46.
My father taught me to love photography. While he passed away 19 years ago tomorrow, I think and use something he taught me every day. |

It is your standard round peel and stick, but in the gutter all around, it is kind enough to offer up advice to the photography: "Always be polite as a good polite photographer will get more work than an ignorant but good photographer", "Produce good work and show the best of it off at every opportunity", and "Always carry business cards to hand 'round"

Being on the floor for my first ever NBA game to photograph a Julius Erving finger roll, and nearly get run over after a Darryl Dawkins Chocolate Thunder slam is quite a memory. Oh, and the milky white background that I thought ruined every picture at the time. Smoking was allowed. |
