recovering a DVD from a dead powerbook

->> My trusty 12" G4 powerbook died a few days ago. It's totally, completely dead. Won't even power up. I knew this was day coming and had been doing daily backups, so no data lost.

Unfortunately I was watching a DVD at the moment of demise. Anyone know how to get the disc out?

->> Is there a small hole in the player? If so, unbend a paperclip and push it in the hole. That should trip the release.

->> Bradley,

Even if the OS doesn't boot, on Macs you can hold down the mouse button at power-on and the system will eject the CD in the drive. Not sure how "dead" yours is, but it might be worth a shot.

There is a small hole on the right side of the opening of the disc drive and you use a paperclip to release the disc. I don't know if it requires power or not. The other solution would be to take it to an Apple Service Provider or the Apple Store.

Whatever you do, do not go fishing for it with tools- you will ruin the disc.

http://www.ifixit.com has instructions on how to take apart your notebook.

->> Thanks for the input everyone. Apparently the larger G4 PB's have a paper clip hole, but not the 12".

I was able to get the computer powered up one last time and ejected the disc. Seems to be a short somewhere in the power connections. Not sure yet if I'll bother troubleshooting or just take hint and get a new computer.
