USA TODAY's Inauguration documentary movie

->> I want to share with you all a project we just completed at USA TODAY and get some of your feedback. We wanted this documentary to harness the best of visual storytelling to tell a story about America's journey to this historic inauguration day. This includes video journalism, photojournalism, and motion graphics.

I had the opportunity to meet & tell the story of some beautiful people including Civil Rights leaders, a congressman, a woman who overcame alcohol and homelessness, World War II veterans, and a man who believed God called him to serve the disadvantaged in a unique way during the inauguration.
This is our first project of this scale and we hope to do more. America's Journey: Inauguration Day 2009 contains seven chapters ~41 minutes of storytelling. It's even for sale on Amazon and is currently ranked 17th in sales in the documentary category. Crazy exciting

On a technical note I used the 5dmkII as a second camera on my interview of John Lewis (chapter 3) and I love the way it looks but loathe it's audio & exposure control limitations. I've just got to do some more work to match the image profile to my HD body (Sony XDCAM EX-1). The talented Thad Allendar also shot the 5dmkII out on the National Mall on Inauguration day with a wireless lav mic which worked out really well. He's also the brains behind our Motion intro's.
I'm just now beginning to recover from Inauguration after four of us worked around the clock to cut this documentary. That said, I may forget some of the recognition I want to give the VJ team at USAT and some fellow ss members. Many thanks to Steve Elfers, Rhyne Piggot, Thad Allender, Bob Deutsch, Jack Gruber, Darr Beiser, Jud McCrehin, good friend (and uber-talented) Brian Kaufman and Mandi Wright from The Detroit Free Press. |

->> Fantastic stuff Garrett (and the VJ team at USA Today)! I'm only halfway through all of it, but I'm sure the 2nd half is as great as the first. Keep it up!
P.S. Your lens is enjoying its new life in the south, and all of the adventures that are associated... |

| ->> Thanks Fish :) Thank you all for such kind words. What are your thoughts of using a program such as Apple Motion as a medium to tell visual stories? (as in the intro's for each chapter of our doc) Any ethical dilemma's? Is news the right outlet for such a tool? |
