"... a century plus old event."
Are you talking about the inauguration itself, or PHOTOGRAPHING the inauguration?
The inauguration itself is more than TWO centuries old... Of course, maybe another century is what you meant by "plus." |

->> Walter,
Because the gurus at SportsShooter haven't branded a Pelican case yet.
Seriously, since I'm quoted in the article and I crawled around on the frozen marble underneath the platform to help run the wiring I can comment on it but all I'll say is that Chuck overcame a lot of hurdles thrown in his way by anticipating the questions and having the right answers.
It paid off in the image you see. |

A great example of a 'defining moment' captured with still photography that could never be fully expressed through video.
Cheers Chuck! |

George, just curious if you know, was he able to see a live view on a computer as he was shooting, or was it capture the images and see after all is said and done.
See hard work and thinking inside the pelican case does work :)
Here Here, Chuck!!! |

Thanks for the heads up and the early pic. Need to get a copy of Scott Applewhite's shot with President Obama by the remote.
Cheers to you, Chuck and Mark Abrahams, I know he helped pave the way.

But, I'm sure the designers will pick the standard old tired photo.

->> Huge hats off to Chuck, George and all involved. A historic image of a historic event.
It is fascinating to peruse the front pages and see how many different ways the photo was used. My hometown paper and a few others put type on it, UGH! Some others cropped out the kids and made it a vertical. Some really scary ones had designer run amuck composites with other pictures. The smart ones, IMHO, used it BIG and STRAIGHT.
Again, simply beautiful. Great job. |

->> It's Pg. 1 of the Dallas Morning News. First thing I heard from a co-worker: "It's a staged shot. They set that up. That's not how it looked on TV."
I was able to set them straight.
Great job!!!!! |

->> Pete, I did say OverXposed but it was cut out, here is what I sent to them:
"It is mounted on a camera plate (an OverXposed plate if you want to be exact) that is screwed into the platform and then mounted on a Bogen arm."
Take it up with the writer!!!
Seriously, if anyone ran it on the front of their paper or as a double truck can you send the clips or a PDF to me?
We did not do Live View on it, though I guess we could have. Chuck was busy shooting hand-helds of the event at the same time and making some other nice images that way. It was triggered by a foot-pedal on about 250 feet of zip line.
Chuck set the camera to shoot RAW+jpeg but due to bandwidth transmitted only the JPEG. All the images were sent through the transmitter and DSL line to the office where they were edited then sent to our clients and distributed by everyone participating in the pool so that is why you will see it credited as McClatchy-Tribune or MCT, AP, Getty, Reuters, EPA or simply Pool photo via XX. Because of the file size it took a while for all of the images from the remote to come thru for editing but I am happy to say that MCT's first image of Obama with his hand in the air posted to clients at 12:14 p.m., about 8 minutes after it happened.
I will stress again that this was Chuck's baby. All I did was be a sounding board for his ideas of how to circumvent any questions the organizers of the JCIC may have. That and logistics of transmitting from the camera. The idea and vision was all his.
(and, yes, over the last few years of working Final Fours and other events with the WFT units I've become a damn good wire crawler. For the record, when it's in the 20s marble gets very, very cold.) |

Sweet photograph...
It ran page one, full page vertical in the
Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
The power of the still image lives on. |

Eight minutes! How amazing is technology today. I know we all know this already, but just think what it took to get images over the wire just 10 years ago, let alone for the inaugurations of Kennedy or Eisenhower!
Amazing photo, btw. |

| ->> That is an awesome photo!! Too bad some readers didn't get to see the complete image. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram ran it on 1A almost full bleed so they made it vertical and by doing that they lost the two girls and the capital. Those two elements really emphasis a wonderful sense of place and emotion. |

| ->> I think what Patrick might mean is that they added sky to the photo...another photographer and I were talking about that exact thing just a few minutes aqo...when shooting a photo-illustration I think you can get away with adding sky and what not but in a news photo even if you put photo-illustration I think its deceiving. |

John Petrovic, Photographer

Olathe | KS | | Posted: 3:36 PM on 01.21.09 |
| ->> After I posted my previous comment I see what Jeremy is saying...I am trying to find the full image if what we see in the horizontal is not it. Most papers cropped it above the capital building. |

Olathe | KS | | Posted: 3:46 PM on 01.21.09 |
->> After looking around I found that on
http://www.mctdirect.com/index.php it shows the photo only as a horizontal so it makes me believe that the vertical in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and others might have "manipulated" it a little. What do others think. |

I don't think the Fort Worth Star-Telegram manipulated the photo. It was just severely cropped in their paper today. McClatchy-Tribune Photo Service could have sent this cropped vertical version out as well as the full frame horizontal.
On David Harpe's post up top his link has a couple other papers that ran the image as a tight crop vertical. |

Just like Chuck Kennedy did with this nice swearing-in photo. It was such a breath of fresh air from all the long glass images of same! Congrats Chuck! |
