Need pricing advice for a private photo tutorial

->> Hey all,
I was approached by a woman interested in learning how to use her Nikon D300 and studio equipment. I need advice on how to price this kind of mini-workshop. This is the first time I've been approached with this opportunity, and I have no idea what to charge. She suggested either a half-day (4 hours) or full-day (8). She also lives 45 miles away, which is something I need to factor in. Any thoughts?

She should come to you, or you need to raise your fee to include travel.

I'd look at it just like an assignment. What is you fee structure for assignments of this length.

->> Oh, what the heck. I can't be the only one who sees this and thinks it's a bit odd that someone owns a fairly high grade camera and, in particular, studio equipment but doesn't know how to use either. Sounds like a GWC (Gal With Camera) to me. I'd suggest factoring in how much money you're likely to loose when she starts undercutting your rates.

->> Ironic that I was approached for the exact same thing except the lady is coming to me. She's supposedly a fairly accomplished photographer in her own right and just wants to get some tips on composition and such. I charged her $100 for a couple hours of joint shooting. It may be too inexpensive but she's not a competitor of mine as she shoots wildlife and landscape.

Mike, some of students buy 40D or d300 and do not know how to use them at all.

->> I would charge minimum $50/hr, but probably more depending on the class. That's practically what I paid for photo classes when I went to school. Why should they pay any less?

->> Thanks for the advice, people. This woman is a sculptor who has decided to learn photography so that she can do her own photos of her work. I'd be making the journey to her home since she has everything setup in her studio, with her 3-D sculptures mounted on a wall surrounded by the lights. She wants to become more proficient with lighting and the camera, which is what we'd be aiming for. $50/hour sounds like a reasonable ballpark figure.

->> ana....i would agree with that fee. like you said 1.5 hr round trip definitely needs to be calculated into your fees. i believe for tax purposes you can use .58 cents a mile for a reference point.

->> Mileage rates are intended to compensate for the use of a vehicle, not one's time.

I would charge time from the moment you walk out of the house, and ensure to factor in the time you will need for preparation/research and the inevitable followup phone calls/emails.
