Seattle P-I rumors

->> Hopefully just rumors. The P-I is a darn good paper.

->> If true, it would be a terrible loss to Seattle.

Seattle is the type of quality town that needs two competitive newspapers.

->> Unfortunately I think many two newspaper towns will lose one of their papers in the near future. Just not enough ad dollars to go around.

->> And given that the Seattle Times just offered buyouts to several staff people (including SS member Rod Mar) I wonder how long they'll survive?

Where I live, the Dayton Daily News has been the only paper for a long time, though both papers had been owned by the same company for a while before that.

First two papers become one, then one goes to two or three days delivery a week (like the Detroit Free Press) and then ??

Wow.

I think a lot of people in the public who look at pictures or read stories on Google or Yahoo think this is no big deal, since they don't read newspapers anyway.

But what they don't realize is where (for the most part) those pictures and stories come from.

Looking around, there sure is a lot of moss on this slope we're on.

->> Another disturbance in "The Force."

There are very few two newspaper towns outside of NYC.

The Seattle Times may cut costs through staff downsizing, but if the P-I folds, there will be a greater probability the Times may survive, for now.

But where jobs, by the thousands, were closed last year, I fear that entire papers will close this year.

->> The only reason they're "for sale" is the Justice Dept. (which oversees the Joint Operating Agreements like in Seattle, Detroit and Denver) forces them to do so instead of simply closing.

Sad day.... again.

->> If you want to be depressed, read the comments posted on the Seattle Times website after the story.

This democracy is doomed if those people are typical of the majority of Americans.

Good luck and God Bless all of the P-I staff and employees.
