Boston-area folks that want to can come take a look at some of his Obama work and other historic frames from his career. Just give me a heads up if you come prowlin'. |

Documenting Obama's Journey Becomes Photographer's Journey
Pete Souza realizes a dream by publishing a book about Barack Obama.
http://www.sportsshooter.com/news/1992
This is really fantastic news. Now all Pete needs is for his beloved Red Sox to win a World Series during his term so he can photograph their trip to the White House. That would pretty much put everything together.
Nice going Pete! |

->> Just goes to show you what being in the right place at the right time can do for you. Not that Pete doesn't deserve this in-and-of-itself, he certainly does, and my congratulations to him, but had he not covered Obama's first year in the Senate, I doubt he would have been on Gibb's or Obama's radar.
This is why I love this industry; you just never know what set of circumstances will work on your favor to propel you forward into an opportunity you sometimes never saw coming and least expected. Just ask Abraham Zapruder about that axiom.
Way to go Pete! |

->> Phil,
It's quite a leap for you to suggest that Pete Souza's illustrious career is an anyway an appropriate comparison to the horrific incident that Abraham Zapruder, a woman's clothing manufacturer, bore witness to.
I for one believe you owe Pete an apology, as the rather weak compliment you appended to the post was drowned out by your inconsiderate insinuation...
It is often said that President's do not make history, but that history makes the President. We should, given these difficult times, simply congratulate Mr. Souza and wish him our support and admiration on this new chapter in his career. I'm eager to see what work he'll produce.
Respectfully,
Robert |

->> I want to echo John Harrington's comments in my personal musings here. It is very gratifying to know that such a historic presidency will be in the hands of such a talented and professional JOURNALISTS. Perhaps it will be years after the end of this president's time in office before we see much of the best behind the scenes work but I'm confident it will be worth the wait. This is only made the more cool because I (and many of us here) feel like we know Pete through this community.
and on to my continued musings. What an amazing challenge this must be. Pete, having done it before for Ronald Regan, is more prepared than most anyone, I'm sure, but still. The White House photography office must be like running the staff of a major metro paper with so many logistical challenges, coverage demands and of course all the quirks and nuances of managing any staff of creative individuals? I can't fathom doing the job. I can romanticize it, even dream of doing it, but when it comes time to really think about it I can't for a moment believe I would be up to such a task. I can manage my small staff, my small paper, my small coverage area, but the White House is so much bigger than just that building, it extends, by way of the office of the presidency, throughout the world.
Pete, Congratulations, good luck, and I look forward to the book(s).

->> Hey, everyone, I got a couple of emails from folks suggesting my post on this was not received as intended. My words did not accurately represent my sentiment apparently, and for that I do humbly apologize to Pete and anyone else who thinks it was not right.
Upon reflect I guess I can see where people didn't get what I was trying to get across... The words didn't match the sentiment apparently. Yes, I was trying to pay him a compliment, and also make the point that his previous work with Obama in the Senate contributed to his getting the job, thus being in the right place at the right time with the original assignment to cover Obama's first year. Who could have predicted that this assignment would, in part, lead to becoming White House photographer? The part about Zapruder was an attempt to tongue-in-cheek, punctuate that small point. So much for that failed attempt. I wrote the post in a hurry and did not properly think it through.
It's certainly not within me to denigrate or to slight a photojournalists assignment as White House photographer. Quite the contrary. I was lying in bed last night and for some reason couldn't sleep and was running in my mind that Pete Souza will be standing in the middle of world history for at least the next four years. His work will be preserved, printed, reprinted, interpreted, judged, and hopefully will help historians gain understanding and insight into if not world events, then the man who shaped them. And this will be done for hundreds possibly thousands of years into the future. What a sobering position to find one's self. But exciting and endlessly rewarding as well. Wow... I have nothing but respect for Pete and those who will round out his staff. |

->> Pete should be surprised?
On the day Pete's selection was announced, when my wife got home from work, I told her the good news of Pete new job. Donna said "You should e-mail him RIGHT NOW and ask for a job. He'll never know unless you ask him directly."
Knowing Pete answer beforehand, I dutifully send the e-mail as Donna watch. Her command was not something one ignores. Grin.
Of course the President-Elect already had is ducks in a row, and there is no way I had a snowballs chance at getting on any shortlist, but hey, judging from the economy, with the next presidency being of such historic value, and so many fabulous photo-journalists on the street looking for work, Pete should have known he'd be inundated.
We should all be proud as a nation that Pete was tapped for this job. History will be well served. |

->> The White House website (http://www.whitehouse.gov) seems to have received a dramatic makeover today. It includes links to blogs and other communication tools. Would be great if there was a link to photos that are taken throughout the day and during the term of the administration by the Official Photographer! There is a Slideshow link with pictures of past Presidents on there now, so let's hope there are some newer ones that surface on there.
Good luck Pete! Truly an honor... |
