About Final Cut Workflow

->> I need to speed up my workflow. Ive noticed Ive been spending a lot more time infront of my computer instead of my camera and Im not liking that. It needs to be the other way. So Im looking for answers from those who know a little something about organization.
1. I know the basics when it comes to nesting like nesting your clips then applying an effect or filter to apply to all clips in your nest. My question is can I apply Scale to all my clips in the nest? Or can I apply a certain number to my Centre point or Rotation to apply to all clips in my nest, or is nesting the way to go with this problem?
IE: Ive got 12 clips on my Sequence and I want all of my clips to be the exact same size and in the exact same location within my Canvas without painfully resizing one by one. Ive tried to set it up in Automator but it just gets confused, or maybe Im the one whos confused. You can put those same 12 clips in your sequence and highlight them all then select speed/duration and it will affect all. So what about Scale and Rotation, etc?
2. When a Project is complete is there anyway to clear all unused files from within my Bins? Or from within a Project? Instead of manually removing them one by one?
THANKS. |

->> Chad - In your manual look up 'Copy & Paste Attributes' that allows you to copy clip settings from one to another or many clips in a sequence. It allows a number of options for transferring video and audio settings from filters, crop, motion, pan, levels etc
For completed projects check out the "Media Manager" tool from the FCP file menu. It allows you to streamline your project including deleting unused media among other options
Keep in mind though that Media Manager is a very powerful tool that is not forgiving once you set it a task so its best to run from a test project before you let it loose on something you care about.

->> WOW!, why didnt I know about this before...? Ugh, time I ll never get back. The stack of books you get with FCP is the size of a smart car, easier to post and Im glad I did.
What would have taken me between 2-3 hrs to complete, ive just finished in less than an hour. WOW!
p.s. I fear the power of Media Manager, well at least for now, until I back up and Export. I just dont want to have to reconnect media should something go wrong.
Michael if we lived remotly close I would by you a beer. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

->> The media manager is an amazing tool but like I said take your time and work from a couple of test projects so you understand what happens in each of the output modes.
Additionally if you are messy with you log and capture, if you reset your scratch discs mid project or have merged clips (video clip synced to separate wav files) you can have problems so you have to be smart with your project setup start to finish and never deviate.
And you're right the books are big but chock full of information. If video tutorials are more your thing check out the folks over at Ripple training http://www.rippletraining.com/
