n00b question - Blown Shutter?

->> My 30d was giving me the ol' Error 99, so I took off the battery grip, cleaned the contacts, etc., etc.
It still gives it to me. I can click it once, but it's not the normal shutter sound, and then it gives me the:
Shooting is not possible. Turn the power switch to and again or re-install the battery.
Needless to say, those don't work.
I put it in sensor cleaning mode and it looks like the focal plane shutter is permanently closed. Also, I have to take the battery out for the mirror to flip back down.

->> When I got my brand new MarkIII about a year ago I kept getting the same error99 message. The camera would lock up, I would shut it off, remove the battery and then was able to shoot anywhere from 2 to 20 more images, then it would come back. Sounds to me like you are not a virgin anymore, welcome to the club....! Hopefully the camera is under warranty, with Canons new CPS member policy, who knows what it will cost to repair. Good luck and sorry, I feel your pain.

->> Pull the internal battery as well. Wait a few minutes and then reinstall. (page 40 of your owners manual. Backup battery for time/date is inside the battery compartment)
Another suggestion would be to reinstall the firmware.
(as for having to turn the body off to get the mirror to drop after putting it into sensor cleaning mode -that's exactly what's supposed to happen. See page 42 of the manual.) |

->> Thanks, guys.
Mark:
Turning it off doesn't get the mirror to drop. I have to actually remove the battery. |

->> When the shutter on my 20d went I had the exact opposite happen. The mirror would not stop moving. The camera acted like I was shooting a burst from the moment I put a battery in.
I know that Canon told me it would be cheaper to buy a refurb body than replace the shutter.
KEH quoted me a price around 180 for a shutter so if your tight on money then keep that option in mind. |

->> Try it without the battery grip and see what happens. My old 20D had a crack in the grip and sometimes under stress, it would lose contact resulting in Err99. It was very erratic but always came at the most inopportune times.
I've got nothing for you on the cleaning mode issue. |
