Week in LA, Where to eat?

->> Greetings all,
I will be spending the next week in the LA area following the every move of the Marching Band of America. Control your excitement, I know...... The reason for the post is that I am looking for suggestions on places to eat (staying at Marriot LAX) that are nice but not ridiculous in price. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays to all. |

Open 24 hours every day. Just do not leave any camera gear in the car. Rodney Bingenheimer had his previous GTO stolen from the area. I would recommend the Avocado Melt, however the whole menu is pretty solid from potato pancakes to their classic sandwiches.

My other nomination will go to The Pantry on 9th and Figueroa, a few blocks north of the Staples Center. If you are interested in a grease injection to your arteries. Toasted sourdough bread and coleslaw is pretty sweet. |

I prefer In-N-Out for burgers, I like mine animal style, burger only not the fries. There's one right down the street from LAX, kind of a cool place to eat in your car because it's at the end of one of the runways and the planes come in almost right over your head.

->> May I be so presumptuous as to try and edit/condense some of these responses.
First: If you have never been to In-N-Out, start there. It's sort the standard for food life in CA. Even veggies go there. If you order fries make sure to get them well done. Then go to Tommy's. Because even a 4x4 might not make one whole meal ;). L.A. invented the chili burger.
2. Langer's has the best pastrami sandwich, even NYers will give them props. But they are only open for lunch which is probably just as well as they are adjacent to a park which was once known as 'crack-central' but has mellowed of late. Langers is also an old-school LA joint and a great example of our history.
3. Phillipe's is the classic LA joint. You get a french-dip sandwich here. Beef, and lamb, and...i forget. I get the lamb w/blue cheese, doubled-dipped. The meat is meltingly tender. They also constantly have a selection of fine wines by-the-glass on rotation at ridiculous prices.
4. Hit up Thai town (right by Hollywood) for sure. But, we also have really good Vietnamese restaurants. Get a bowl of Pho. Pho 79 is pretty good, for one. Oh, and Golden Deli, too.
5. El Tepeyac is the place. The Hollenbeck is the burrito. It's named after the local police station. E'nuff said.
oh yeah: And being from Pasadena i'd have to say you try Pie'N'Burger. It's a little overpriced and the waitresses can be a little rude, but it's...well it is what it is. It's pretty much unchanged from the 70's or earlier.
Cheers! |

->> C & O Trattoria 31 West Washington Blvd., Venice, CA
best italian food in so cal. it is worth it just for the free garlic rolls (yummmy!) order a 'half' order of anything, unless you can eat a LOT. and in the evening, if you're there long enough, they pass out the lyrics to "that's amore" and EVERYONE sings. it's not an exact science, but it tends to be once an hour after 6pm. if you go during the day, it is walking distance to the Venice Boardwalk.
http://www.cotrattoria.com/
El Tepeyac Cafe 812 N Evergreen Ave in East LA
this is where i take all my friends when they ask for mexican food. authentic, filling, inexpensive and fast. most of the time your food will be on your table 5 minutes after you order it. the place is small and well known, so expect to wait. but is THE place if you ask me. and if you love guacamole, you will not find any place with better guacamole unless you make it yourself. this isn't the liquidy green stuff. this is chunky, stick to the spoon kind of guacamole.
http://losangeles.citysearch.com/profile/map/59599/los_angeles_ca/el_tepeya...
Natalee Thai 10101 Venice Blvd., LA, CA 90230
my photo studio used to be near the original venice/culver city location and i would order from here at least twice month. my Pad Thai standard is set by this restaurant. i have not found better Pad Thai than this place. at least, not yet. i keep trying, but not yet.
http://www.nataleethai.com/
Cherrystones Grotto and Grill 15501 S. Vermont Ave., Gardena, CA 90247
steak and seafood hawaiian style. this isn't your hawaiian plate lunch kind of place...it's better! i have never had a bad meal here and i've eaten here a lot. if Leonard (the owner) is there, ask him to do a magic trick (he's really good). they also have a full bar and if you're into singing, friday night (after 9pm) is karaoke night.
http://www.cherrystones.org/
the Loft 23305 Hawthorne Blvd., Torrance, Ca 90505
if you want Hawaiian style plate lunches, this is the place. if you order one thing, i have 4 words for you to remember - island style fried chicken. to die for! this isn't KFC. there is a sweetness in the marinade they use before they fry it that makes this the best fried chicken i have ever eaten.

The Noodle Planet in WEsstwood Village
Pinks for the best hot-dogs, very iconic place, on La Brea and Melrose LONG LINE
Tito's Tacos on Washington AVe in Culver City. Cheap and great! Always pack while other rest in the areas are empty.
The Clay Pit in Brentwood Village, great lunch Indian buffet
while supper is more costly.
Bossa Nova on Robertson and Sta Monica Blvd in WEst H'wood
Pastina, wonderful Italian restaurant in WEst LA
El Floridita, great Cuban meals, 1253 N. Vine St.
Cobra y Matador, great tapa restaurant, loud as hell but the ambiance is great and lots of great looking Euro chics. You buy your great Spanish bottle of wine next door and bring it in. Pretty popular hip H'wood place on 7615 West Beverly Blvd
Sushidan on 11056 Ventura Blvd in the Valley
Chosun Galbee brilliant Korean Barbecue Restaurant
3330 W. Olympic Boulevard
Raes for great breakfast. On pico between Centinela and 26th st Price is great. Just bring your LA times and chill out. Old diner and great for photos too.
Enjoy LA and like you been told in here NEVER leave your gear in the car. Yrs before I moved to LA I was doing some photo shoots, 1996, went out to lunch with my crew and out of stupidity we left over 50K worth of gears and over 200 shot rolls of film and once we got back from lunch all was stolen.
Dont forget to try In-n-Out. Everyone in LA will tell you so. Apple Pan is an establishment too, but pricey for what you get.

-Dinah's Chicken in Glendale and in Culver City or Westchester (not quite sure of the neighborhood). Good ol' fashioned fried chicken. Great sides too.
-Palermo in Los Feliz. Long wait but you can get small glasses of wine for $0.75 or so while you wait.
-Porto's in Glendale. Cuban bakery/cafe. Long lines but great food. |

->> Let's see since I was raised in LA here are some of my favorites:
Dressed up: Morton's they are in Downtown LA, Beverly Hills, Newport Beach and Woodland Hills there menu is pricy but if you like good food and a nice wine list this is a very good restaurant, also there crab cakes are awesome.
Jeans and a sweatshirt: Barney's Beanery on Santa Monica Blvd. , Titos Tacos on Washington in Culver City, In & Out Burgers, Cantors Deli, Roscoe Chicken and Waffles also check out Redondo Beach Pier there are several nice places on the pier.
Have a great time and if you get a chance check out Grumans Chinese Theatre and Samy's Cameras in Hollywood. Also on Fairfax is Farmers market a LA must. |

Also and I know this sounds touristy, but Knotts Berry Farm has some awesome fried chicken meals. The lines are usually long to get in, but I take mine to go and eat in the room. A must try at least once in your life.

->> Lot's of good recomendations so far.
Gyu Kaku, if you like Japanese BBQ (several locations)
Kings hawaiian in South Bay, amazing pastries, and food ain't half bad either.
Best Kosher burgers in the world are a place called Jeff's gourmet, on pico & robertson.... featured on Bobby Flay, (also the only kosher sausage maker on the west coast)
If you could narrow it down a little, we could narrow our parameters. There is sooo much amazing food in this city, you could eat at a new place every single day, (or 3x a day) and keep going forever.
Bosa Nova is awesome, they have several locations above the one mentioned. Both C&o's are good, (down the street from one another), but there's a little hole in the wall called Alejo's on the corner of Lincoln & Washington, amazing, and huge portions! another of my favorites is Fritto Misto, both Santa Monica, and Hermosa Beach.
And how can we forget about Johnnies pastrami?!??!?! (washington and sepulveda, across the parking lot from Tito's tacos)
let us know if you'e looking for anything in particular.
Happy new year all! |

->> hey jeff...would you go to denny's on crenshaw?
joking around is all fun and good but when it comes to someone's safety, you don't joke around with that. you don't have any guarantee that the person will understand that the crenshaw area isn't exactly the safest place in LA. if you want to joke around, do it when someone's safety isn't involved.

Johnny Pastrami at Sepulveda and Washington in Culver City the best pastrami in town being served since 1953 - probably been there longer than some of us have been alive.
