->> Interesting read about the state of university journalism programs.

My favorite quote is this one:
"Journalism programs are sometimes described as "cash cows" for universities, Turk said. They attract lots of students and you can start them for relatively little money." |

You would be one of those cows they use to make Kobe beef. |

->> As the daughter of two former journalists who grew up going to crime scenes, and who now works for a professional membership association of police chiefs, I loved the last line of the article... too true!
My university didn't/doesn't have a journalism program... we said the student newspaper WAS the j-school! 150 students putting together a 20+ page, broadsheet daily with no faculty advisors and no funding (or oversight!) from the school... AND we won awards. We taught each other and groomed our successors and we always held ourselves to high standards.
I think there actually is a Media Studies major at my alma mater now that grew out of the English department, but no J-School or Mass Comm. school. Nevertheless, many veterans of the college paper went on to work for well-respected news outlets. I think J-School is probably good if it's an option for you, but it certainly isn't the only road. |

Well depending on how you handle things, it could mean you went to school for another year or two, learned some new skills, got a graduate degree - which could qualify you to teach at many institutions, and did it all for free via a assistantship program at the school that included a stipend and tuition waiver. |

| ->> I read an article my senior year in AJR or some other industry publication that said journalism schools were producing too many graduates for an industry that failed to properly compensate college graduates. The story said that industry was grateful for the supply of new talent so they could continue to keep wages low. |
