->> It's easy to find humor about it in retrospect, but it could have been much worse. Regardless of how you feel about Bush, the fact that someone was able to almost hit our President with an object at close range is pretty scary.
I'm really surprised the Secret Service didn't react fast enough to block the second shoe. These are the guys that dive in front of bullets. You would think after the first one the guy wouldn't have had a chance at a second toss, even if it happened quickly. |

Yes, in the movies. If you have never gone through security for a POTUS event, the worst the guy could have thrown is a camera or lens.
But I am guessing you and most Americans don't understand the meaning of throwing a shoe. It is a big insult and has nothing to do with trying to hurt someone. |

->> Wesley, in the Arab culture, showing the sole of one's foot to another is deemed extremely inappropriate and shameful.
The Arab culture is a shame-based culture, and it is a different culture to the West.
An AFP photographer based here in Cairo, took a picture of some head of state with Mubarak, prez of Egypt. But the visiting head of state (I think it was a head of state), sat with legs crossed and with the sole of his foot pointing to Mubarak. The picture was run and subsequently the AFP photographer has had his rights revoked to photograph the president again. In the West we smile about it, but it is a true cultural no-no.
So when a shoe is thrown, it is an even more extreme way of projecting shame on the person on the receiving end. |

respectfully,

Fine. But if the President or whoever can care less about what others think...???
I mean, people all over the world burn the American flag all the time. How disrespectful is that?
So? What do I or we care about their opinion?
Though it seems when the reverse happens, there are riots and people end up getting killed.
I found it funny actually, sorta like a scene from the movie "Naked Gun." |

Whether you like Bush or not, he is our president at this time. He was the one that initiated the change that gave this Journalist the freedom to throw a shoe to a sitting president. IMHO, Bush should have left Saddam alone to keep torturing, murdering and raping his country, maybe some here in the US and around the world would be happier!! How would you feel if our incoming president was treated like that?? He is our president and should be treated with respect, whether you like him or not. This thread is shameful and show how the journalists have forgotten the meaning of the word "IMPARTIAL". |

The freedom to throw a shoe? He's been arrested and is being detained. He could face years in prison. No "freedom" at all.
Beside, I'm sure that the previous regime would have been only too happy to allow a journalist to trow a shoe at President Bush. |

->> Merely speculation here, but after watching the video...perhaps Secret Service did not move with the lightning-quick action we expect because they did not perceive a serious threat? After a thorough security sweep of everyone who entered the room (plus the room itself), they probably felt confident enough that the largest threat to the President was a little leather to the face.
But myself, I would've expected to see anyone acting like that taken out even sooner. Kind of a "better safe than sorry" approach. Either way, I'm impressed with how easily he dodged the shoes. Well played. |

->> "An Arab objective journalist?"
Mr. Moriatis,
Perhaps you should do some research on the journalism happening in the Arab world before you illustrate your ignorance in a public forum.
There is a vibrant newspaper culture in the Arab world, with a range of perspectives, doing hard-hitting objective journalism.
I suggest you take some time to explore the media in countries outside your own. It is a great way to gain another perspective. And, in instances like these, it can save you from making a fool of yourself.
All over the Arab world, there are journalists doing amazing work, often times risking the wrath of their governments to speak out against corrupt and despotic regimes in the region. In places like Iraq, they are risking their life.
Newspapers in Lebanon, Iraq, Egypt, the UAE, Palestine and the newspapers that serve the Arab community within Israel, all contribute to a rich tradition of journalism in the Arab world.
Conveniently, there are several that are printed in English, which you can access through the internet, if you care to educate yourself.

http://www.dailystar.com.lb
Also, here is a link to The Charlie Rose show, where Arab journalists talk about covering the Iraq story. Perhaps this will change your perspective.

I, for one, am glad you started this thread.
Now I know the story behind the story, specifically the significance of showing the sole of one's shoe to another in the Arab culture.
We also now have an additional glimpse of the emotions and viewpoints of some of the posters. Not a surprise that this forum is made up of all types, like society as a whole.
If we all agreed on everything this place would be boring.

As you can tell by my name, I might know a thing or two about the Middle Eastern culture. Now tell me one thing...
Where's the "hard-hitting objective journalism" in throwing a shoe at a sitting US President??? What if he had done the same thing to the Upcoming President Elect??
The only difference is that some in the International & Local Journalistic community like one and hate the other.
That is the only difference.
The office of the President of the United States of America should be respected, by the public and by the President himself!!

Jim, maybe this would have been condoned by Saddam. Depends on the time frame. Let's not eve try to pretend that being jailed and charged with assault is even close to what the prior Iraqi administration would have done to deal with this. I'm thinking maybe torture for the thrower and his entire family.
