| ->> I'm going to briefly be in Honolulu to cover the Hawaii bowl, and I'll have one real day (Tuesday Dec. 23rd) with no plans whatsoever. I've never been to Hawaii, so I'm looking for suggestions as to where to eat/visit/sightsee to get in as much of the Hawaii experience as possible in a day. Thanks! |

->> Hike Diamond Head for a gorgeous view. If you're not scuba certified, check out Haunama Bay for awesome snorkeling.
Try Rainbow for some good Hawaiian Plate lunch. |

->> Anything is worth doing.
Enjoy the sun and warmth.
Everything listed above is great.
There is also great sea kayaking on the east shore by Kailua. I also photographed 'Medieval' re-enactors there. Full armor and broad swords. The weirdest thing I ever saw visiting Hawaii. |

Nah, just hanging out on the warm beach is super nice. Probably be a nice break from shooting.
Just stay out of Waikiki... *shudders* |

...........no wait, that wasn't enjoyable. |

->> It's been raining pretty heavily here on Oahu. I just finished covering the Honolulu Marathon. I got drenched.
I would suggest going out to Kailua and trying to enjoy the beach out there if its sunny. plus you might run into Obama. |

| ->> If your not certified you can still go diving, but you will dedicate most of the day for it. Also you have to wait 24 hours after the dive before getting back into the airplane home. Island divers Hawaii (http://www.oahuscubadiving.com) will give you a lesson in a pool at the Hickham Airforce base and then take you out for two 45 minute dives( snacks and sodas included). The lesson and scuba time will count towards your certification. Pearl Harbor is a great experience, but you need to get there first thing in the morning to be in the first tour. Otherwise you'll be there all day waiting for the boat to go to the USS Arizona Memorial. If your a surfing fan, the north shore is a must. Stay away from Waikiki Beach, No sand and to crowded with tourist traffic. Haunama Bay is great for snorkeling, but you need transport because it's on the other side of the island from Honolulu. In any case, GET OUT OF TOWN! Honolulu is nothing more than L.A. with more palm trees. Come to think of it, I bet L.A. has more palm trees. Have fun. |

->> I'd go beach and go eat. that's what locals do
L&L Drive Inn on Liliha St. (not another one of the franchises. this one looks like a dump. best food)
Leonard's Malasadas on Kapahulu
Liliha Bakery on N. Kuakini St. for coco puffs and good food
Side Street Inn near Ala Moana (probably want reservations)
Diamond Head Grill & Market on Monsarrat
Stortos Sandwiches in Hale'iwa town (got to get papaya seed dressing on it)
Aoki's Shave Ice in Hale'iwa (next door and way better than Matsumoto's which is the famous one)
BBQ Kai in Wai'anae
Zippy's for 24 hour food. chicken and chili mix plate
Original Pancake House for breakfast
Kaka'ako Kitchen in Ward Center
go north shore and watch the waves. see some crazy bodysurfing and bodyboarding at Sandy Beach. Check out the west side for beautiful beaches and more local feel, just be careful. go to Bishop Museum at the bottom of Kalihi valley (my stomping grounds), 'Iolani Palace, and Kawaiaha'o Church in downtown for good history of the Hawaiian islands and our native culture.
have fun. respect the locals and culture and you'll get it back.
aloha!

->> To follow what Rick posted with a clarification:
"If your not certified you can still go diving, but you will dedicate most of the day for it. Also you have to wait 24 hours after the dive before getting back into the airplane home."
This pertains to scuba diving with compressed gas as an avoidance of the bends, caisson sickness. If you are snorkeling this is not an issue.

->> When I visited, we swore by the blue books that are written about the islands. They have a whole book dedicated on Oahu that gives you the scoop on anything interesting on the island (and many off-the-beaten path things). Doesn't matter how long you stay, this book will get you up-to-speed on your flight :) I don't usually get excited about books nor try to promote them, but this is as close to knowing a local.

->> Lots of good suggestions for sure. (except maybe L&L..I'm not a big fan of that place at all) :)
The one thing I'd very strongly recommend is to find a place to secure your gear. If you leave it in the rental car, you are really risking it. This can be true in some areas more than others. Watch out at all the tourists spots. North shore can be really bad at times. Rental cars standout like a sore-thumb and are targeted on a regular basis.

->> hawaii is no worse a place for thefts than any place else. you need to be smart about where ever you take gear. leaving a 400 2.8 in a stadium workroom or a think tank roller in the backseat of your car, you need to be smart wherever you go.
not just in hawaii |

| ->> All good suggestions for you to do in Hawaii. Since you are coming for the first time from the mid west, big surf season on the north shore is a must see. Volcano on the Big Island is still flowing (contact ss shooter Bruce Omori for info). So much to list but it all comes down to what you want to do. |

->> This native Kansan votes for a trip to the North Shore. I think the best time to catch the bigger waves is early in the morning (I've only been to Hawaii once, so I'm not the best person to ask about the waves).
My member page still has some of my photos from my visit a year ago. Can't bring myself to take 'em down! I can't get photos like that here in Kansas. :)
So, head that way early, shoot some surf and hang out for a while and you could be back at Pearl Harbor or Diamond Head by mid afternoon. I know PH and DH are typical tourist-type things, but if you've got only that one day I would recommend either of them.
Have fun! |

->> I really appreciate all the replies so far, guys.
I think hiking Diamond Head, visiting the North Shore, sitting on the beach, and eating lots of local food sounds like a pretty great day to me.
And I think I'll end up leaving all my gear back at the hotel for safety/convenience. |

| ->> Consider a tour. I can't believe I'm saying that but on my first trip to Hawaii, about 10 years ago, I had a 1 1/2 day layover and I took one of those Island Circle Tours, or something like that. A bus took us from Diamond Head to the North Shore with good commentary & lunch. It gave me a good feel for what I wanted to do on my next and longer trip and some valuable history of the Island. Of course, I was on my way to Australia at the time so had plenty of real adventure ahead. Have fun. |
