->> WHOOO HOOOO!!
Got the confirmation today. Thanks Bert for putting this all together!
Thanks so much to Nikon's Bill Pekala and Ronal Taniwaki for getting Nikon's financial support - PAYING THE TUITION for all full time students. You have no idea how awesome that is and how much we really appreciate it!
So who else is coming? I know I'm not the only traveler from Missouri. |

Great job Nikon, thanks very, very much from a Canon shooter! ;) |

->> I just wanted to echo what was written above, I got my confirmation on Friday night and I am extremely excited!! A big thank-you goes out to Nikon for sponsoring the Sports Shooter Academy VI (specifically to Bill Pekala and Ronal Taniwaki).
Anyone who is/was a student knows that at this time of year money tends to run quite thin and it has made a huge difference in my budget for attending SSAVI!! |

Definitely a big shout out and thank you to Bill Pekala and Ronal Taniwaki at Nikon for paying the tuition for us full-time students. I think I can speak for all of us by saying it is appreciated and that we are very gracious!
I have been saving up for a while now, hoping for the best. So now, I'll have money to spend on all of the gear that looks cool at SSA :) |

->> Man... we're already up to SSA VI? I feel so old. SSA IV was the last time I shot for anything other than my own articles or projects, and the pictures are still up on my member page! I can't believe it's been that long since I've shot on a regular basis... but I feel like being able to go to SSA VI would be enough to get me back in the game, if only for a weekend... that's how awesome Bert's workshop is.
Long story short, you guys are incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to attend SSA VI, especially on Nikon's dime -- I'd jump on that in a heartbeat. Good luck everyone and keep shooting! |

->> SSA VI is a FABULOUS opportunity for students...and Nikon has recognized this by helping me with support so we can make this as accessible as possible.
Also, because of Nikon's support, I was able to not increase the tuition for non-students participants. Because of the rising expenses, we were looking at a $150 - $200 increase in the tuition for the next workshop.
I have received numerous emails inquiring about VI and the deadline for applying. As in the past, there is no deadline per se. Once all of the available spots are filled, there will be a waiting list.
It goes without saying that the economy is not great, but with Nikon's help, I've been able to make the COOLEST sports photography event of the year as accessible as I possibly can.

He said there shouldn't be any trouble with these days off. So on that note Andrew, Rod, Jared and Daniel, it'll be nice seeing you guys again, and I'm looking forward to meeting some more enthusiastic characters.

| ->> i'm very much interested in attending. what could we expect a typical day to look like in terms of schedule? not specifics, but generally? does the learning start at 9a and go till 10 p, or more like 10 to 4? is there any opportunity for free time to meet with friends in the region? how does it all play out? |

Daniel Berman, Student/Intern, Photographer

Seattle | WA | US | Posted: 2:18 AM on 12.24.08 |
->> Mike,
They have changed up the schedule somewhat since last year, but generally, workshop participants are pretty busy from mid-morning until midnight. You get up early for gear checkout from canon (or nikon as it were), then attend a morning workshop, and then shot two or three events thereafter. And just when you were starting to get sleepy, you go in for critiques until close to midnight. I am sure you could find time to visit with friends, but why would you want to? There is a ton to learn and do just within the program, and it is over so quick anyway -- it would be a shame to miss out IMO.

->> Free time?
Maybe after the workshop ends around 2pm Sunday...
SSA VI kicks off with a series of "Early Bird" classes beginning at 1pm on Wednesday.
Thursday, Friday and Saturday we will start the days at 8am and the editing/critique sessions will end by midnight. In between there will be various events to shoot and instructional sessions --- like remote camera classes, location lighting, etc.
We try to encourage participants to do as much of a "loose edit" during any downtime between workshop events they sign up for. But usually it's a scramble to get to and from events and get a few minutes for lunch and dinner along the way.
The final workshop schedule will not be available until a few weeks before.
Check the various videos on the website for an idea of what The Academy experience is like.
Believe me, there is no other sports photography workshop out there like this.

->> Mike, as Daniel and Robert pointed out you're busy just about all day.
Robert pointed out that the days start at 8am, but when I went to SSA IV some of the days started much earlier. When we shot crew my navigator and I left the hotel before 5am. I didn't shoot horse racing, but I think those guys left around 5am too.
If you want to hook up with friends while you're in Cali, schedule an extra day or two after the workshop. |

->> Nothing before 8am? Shucks... from what I remember, Crew wasn't really scheduled, you just told us where and when it was, and we went. Haha. The days are long, but well worth it. I always leave a few days before to Southern California to make sure I can see a few friends I have down there first. Then it's off to hang out with the friends I get to see usually once a year at SSA. One year I had time to have dinner with a friend that goes to UC Irvine, but that was only for about an hour, and she happens to live right there.
As far as I'm concerned, I can't wait to hit up "The Mexican Affair," in Long Beach, which has become a longtime tradition for me to hit up, as well as In & Out in Irvine. Yum!
Can't wait to see everyone in a few months,
-Andrew |

I am a Cal State Fullerton student. Not sure if there are any other Titans in the mix. As for Brooks, I know of at least one attending, Jeff Ball.
At SSA IV, we had several with Pasadena City College Courier affiliation attend: Jim Comeau, William Hallstrom, Daniel Belis, and me in attendance. |
