Fellow Gannettoids: Roll Call.

->> Many of you are aware of layoffs happening today/yesterday.
Myself: present and accounted for. Lost one full-timer, and a part-timer though, who do much of our work in the north zone. |

| ->> Present. We lost our press. |

Bridgewater | NJ | USA | Posted: 3:40 PM on 12.03.08 |
| ->> We lost 31 full and part time between the Courier News and the Home News Tribune. 56 total positions were eliminated, including non-filled. (this is word of mouth, as I was out sick yesterday, thereby unconfirmed) Our photo staff was untouched, for now. Gannettblog is currently tallying as the numbers come in. |

->> I was laid off today.
It is disappointing, but I have nothing but positive things to say about the fine photo staff that I worked with and the great mentor I worked under for a span of almost three years. They made me the journalist that I am today and the only way to repay that debt is to pay it forward.
Beyond these dark clouds, there must be greener pastures for all of us who believe in the power and purpose of what we do.

->> Michael,
I'm really really sorry. My soon-to-be-wife was laid off from my paper (features editor), in August, so I know a little of what you're going through.
Have a stiff beverage (or three) this evening, sit on the couch for a couple of days, and know that this will be behind you soon.
Best,
Robert
At my paper, our north zone, and features department took the big hits (about six or seven from each). |

| ->> Let me be the first to say that the loss of Michael at our paper will be long felt. He made a huge impact on our readers with his fantastic daily work and creative and inspiring multi-media work. He is empathetic, funny, talented and a joy to work with. More than anything I will miss his friendship. If anyone out their is looking for a talented and fantastic person to work with I highly suggest you take a look at this hard working young man. Take care Mike...I miss ya already...Dan. |

| ->> Over 60 people at that Courier Post (NJ) were laid off. No photographers. Seven vacant positions (including the Photo/Multimedia Editor) were cut at the Daily Journal (NJ) along with six other positions, one of which was a writer/photographer at the group of weeklies that I shoot for. Safe for now. Hopefully there won't be four more rounds of layoffs over the next six months. |

->> Layoffs are a real drag and to all of those who have been laid off, my sympathies to you and I hope you find rewarding work real soon.
But, sorry to say, it is not just staffers who are getting the short end of the stick. Freelancers, like me, are expendable and are always the first to be cut loose in time of financial crisis.
So now my goal is to make myself more valuable to my customers by getting a 5D MkII and start doing video and fill a niche that is lacking or is not done very well. If needed a still from that quality of video would be very acceptable for newsprint. |

->> We lost a part-timer and one position was reduced to part-time. Our Fremont photographer was let go over a month ago (not related to these budget cuts) They say they are not replacing him so I'm running back and forth between both Fremont and Port Clinton papers.
I wish everyone the best |

->> Our daily lost 59 total - 45 involuntary. One photographer, the director/sole staff shooter for the rapidly changing weekly entertainment mag, was shown the door.
Michael - I got the axe about two months ago. Indeed, the grass is greener on this side - although occasionally I do kind of miss having 3-4 different assignments every day. |

->> My company also was hit hard over the past two months. We shut down our free daily last month and this week shut down one of our presses. At the start of the new year we will be changing the 5 bi-weekly papers that run in the county that I work at into once a week papers.
Times are tuff across the board for all papers large or small, daily / weekly or monthly it doesn't matter the size everybody is being affected. I have seen many good friends / co-workers get let go. All I can hope for is that things turn around. Nobody likes to see people lose their jobs. |
